Canisius Takes Series Finale, 10-2

Box Score

Canisius scored in each of the first three innings and got a grand slam from Jake Lumley in the fourth to beat the Youngstown State baseball team 10-2 on Sunday afternoon at Eastwood Field.

The Golden Griffins got the leadoff batter on in each of the first four innings, and he scored all four times. Canisius led 3-0 before Youngstown State scored twice in the bottom of the third to get within a run, but Lumley's grand slam blew the game open.

Alex Larivee led the Penguins with two hits, and Lorenzo Arcuri doubled and scored to extend his hitting streak to five games. Anthony Massicci had three hits, and Lumley plated six runs for Canisius.

Massicci hit the first pitch of the game for a triple, and he scored one batter later on Lumley's sacrifice fly. Ryan Stekl led off with a walk and scored in the second, and Lumley started the third with a single and scored on a two-out single to put the Golden Griffins ahead 3-0.

Both of Youngstown State's runs came in the bottom of the third inning, which Anthony Rohan reached on an error to start. Arcuri doubled him to third, and Larivee followed with an RBI single to left. Arcuri then scored on Andrew Kendrick's sacrifice fly to left as the Penguins made the score 3-2.

Lumley's grand slam came on a 1-2 pitch with one out in the fourth, and it gave Canisius a 7-2 lead. The Golden Griffins added three runs in the eighth inning for the final score.

YSU starter Joe King allowed three runs on five hits in three innings, and the grand slam came off Jesse Slinger. Michael Semonsen pitched three shutout innings, and Joel Hake and Chris Sparks both had a shutout inning. The three runs in the eighth came off Ryan Smith.

Mike Elwood came on due to an injury for Canisius and proceeded to toss 4.1 shutout innings while striking out six Penguins.

Youngstown State will be off during the week for final exams, and it will play a pair of Horizon League road doubleheaders next weekend.
