Penguins Crank Out 15 Hits in 9-2 Win Over Wright State

Youngstown, Ohio -- The Youngstown State softball banged out 15 hits and scored in all but one inning en route to a 9-2 win over Wright State on Friday afternoon at the YSU Softball Field.

With the win, the Penguins, who have won 14 of their last 17 games, improve to 21-14 overall and 8-3 in the Horizon League while the Raiders fall to 24-17 overall and 8-2 in the league.

Junior Sarah Dowd went 4-for-4 with two doubles, senior Miranda Castiglione went 3-for-4 with a double, trilple and home run, and drove in three runs while sophomore Cali Mikovich went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs and sophomore Stevie Taylor had two hits and drove in a run. Junior Brittney Moffatt went 2-for-2 with a pair of doubles.

Freshman pitcher Paige Geanangle (10-7) picked up her 10th win of the year while allowing just four hits with a strikeout.

The Raiders jumped out to a quick 1-0 in the top of the first when Honnah Susor led off with a triple and Vivi Marquez doubled her home with the game's first run.

The Penguins even the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the second when Moffatt sliced a double down the right-field line to plate Taylor, who singled earlier in the inning.

In the bottom of the third, the Penguins used a three-run frame to take a 4-1 lead. Dowd led off the frame with a double to right-center and moved to third on Mikovich's bunt single. Castiglione tripled to right field to scored Dowd and Mikovich, and Taylor's ground out to first plated Castiglione.

The Raiders cut the lead in half with a run in the top of the fourth, but the Penguins answered when Moffatt doubled to left field and scored on Dowd's single to right field.

Katie Smallcomb's two-out, run-scoring single in the bottom of the fifth extended the Penguins lead to 6-2.

The Penguins sealed the game with a three-run sixth inning sparked by back-to-back home runs by Mikovich and Castilgione. Dowd led off the frame with a double to right field and scored on Mikovich's two-run, no-doubter blast to right field. Two pitches later Castiglione laced a line drive over the left-center field fence.

The Penguins and Raiders conclude the series with doubleheader, Saturday, at 1 p.m.
