Softball Gears Up For Six League Games in Four Days

The Youngstown State softball team has a busy week coming up with six Horizon League games in four days when it visits Cleveland State, April 13-14, and hosts Wright State, April 15-16.
The Penguins and Vikings play a doubleheader, April 13, at 3 p.m. and a single game, April 14, at 12:30 p.m. Youngstown State and Wright State will play a single game, April 15 at 3 p.m. and doubleheader, April 16, at 1 p.m.
The Penguins will also celebrate Senior Day on April 16 and will honor seniors Miranda Castiglione, Jordan Macey and Katie Smallcomb.
Last Time Out
The Penguins are coming off a series split against Horizon League foe UIC last weekend. The Penguins dropped game one, 7-2, but rallied late in game two to post a 5-4 victory.
Guins of Late
The Penguins have won 11 of their last 13 games with great pitching and timely hitting. Over the last 13 games, the Penguins batted .312 as a team with 12 home runs and 63 RBIs. Junior Maria Lacatena batted .424 (14-for-33) with three doubles, two home runs, nine RBIs and a .697 slugging percentage. Sophomore Cali Mikovich batted .391 with five homers and 11 runs batted in and a .804 slugging percentage. Freshman pitcher Paige Geanangel went 7-2 with a 1.94 ERA and junior Caitlyn Minney was 4-0 with three complete games, and 27 strikeouts in 31.2 innings pitched.
About Cleveland State
Cleveland State enters the week with an 8-23 overall record and a 1-5 mark in the Horizon League. Senior Erica McNew leads the Vikings and the league with a .464 batting average and has seven home runs. Katelind Phillips is batting .398 for the Vikings.
About Wright State
Wright State has won 12 of its last 14 games and enters the week with a 23-15 overall record and a league-leading 8-1 mark in league play. Ashley Sharp leads the Raiders with an 11-5 record and a 2.12 earned-run average. Honnah Susor leads the team with a .371 batting average while Becka Peterson leads the team with eight home runs.
Castiglione in Class By Herself
Senior Miranda Castiglione has set herself apart from any other softball player in program history. Not only is she the programs all-time leader in steals with 58, she is also the only player in school history with at least 20 home runs (22), 100 runs (118) and 100 RBIs (102) in a career. She also needs just 10 more hits to become the sixth player in school history to record at least 200 hits. She ranks sixth on the hit list with 190.
Minney Crashes 200K Club
Junior pitcher Caitlyn Minney became the seventh player in school history to record at least 200 strikeouts in a career and ranks seventh all-time with 202. She needs nine more to move into sixth place and 20 more to move into fifth.
