Cali Mikovich's Record-Setting Day Leads Softball to Sweep at Cleveland State

Cleveland, Ohio -- Sophomore Cali Mikovich set single-game records with five hits and five runs scored to lead the Youngstown State softball team to a doubleheader sweep of Cleveland State, 15-12, and, 4-2, on Wednesday afternoon at Viking Softball Field.
The Penguins improve to 20--13 overall and 7-2 in the Horizon League while the Vikings fall to 8-25 overall and 1-7 in the league.
In the opener, Mikovich went 5-for-6 with two doubles, a home run, five runs scored and two stolen bases to lead the Penguins' 19-hit attack, which tied a team single-game record.
Junior Sarah Dowd went 3-for-6 with a home run and two runs batted in while junior Maria Lacatena had three hits and two RBIs. Senior Miranda Castiglione had two hits, including a home run, and junior Brittney Moffatt also had two hits, including a home run.
The Penguins scored in all but the top of the fourth inning, including three in the first, two in the second and third, three in the fifth, four in the sixth to take a 14-4 lead.
The Vikings added four in the bottom of the sixth, and, after Moffett's home run in the top of the seventh pushed the YSU lead to 15-8, the Vikings added four more in the bottom of the seventh.
Freshman Paige Geanangel struck out six to pick up her ninth win of the year.
In the nightcap, junior Caitlyn Minney allowed just four hits and one earned run to pick up her 11th wiin of the season.
The Penguins trailed, 1-0, after three innings but used a three-run fourth to take a 3-1 lead. After Mikovich and Castiglione each singled with one out, sophomore Stevie Taylor single up the middle plated Mikovich and Castilgione scored on a throwing error. A single by Lacatena moved Taylor to third and Katie Smallcomb's single scored Taylor for the 3-1 lead.
The Vikings cut the lead to 3-2 with a run in the bottom of the sixth, but the Penguins answered with a insurance run in the top half of the seventh. Moffatt, who had two hits, led off the inning with a single and moved to second on an error and scored on a ground out by Mikovich.
The Penguins and Vikings close the series with a single game, Thursday, at 12:30 p.m.
