
Softball Earns Split at Oakland on Friday

Rochester, Mich. -- Junior Caitlyn Minney struck out eight and allowed just six hits and senior Miranda Castiglione went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI to lead the Youngstown State softball team to a 4-1 win over Oakland in game two of a doubleheader on Friday. The Penguins lost game one, 2-0.
With the split, the Penguins impove to 16-12 overall and 4-1 in the Horizon League while the Golden Grizzlies improve to 7-19 overall and 3-2 in the league.
Junior Sarah Dowd went 3-for-4 in the nightcap and scored a run and junior Alexandria Gibson had two doubles.
Castilgione hit a two-run home run, her fifth of the year, in the top of the first to give the Penguins a 2-0 lead. Dowd, who singled to right-center to lead off the game, scored on Castiglione's homer to right-center field.
In the top of the third, Maria Lacatena extended the Penguins' lead to 3-0 with a run-scoring single to right-center field that plated Gibson, who doubled.
Stevie Taylor doubled home Gibson, who hit her second double of the game, in the top of the fifth to push the YSU lead to 4-0.
The Golden Grizzlies scored a run in the bottom of the sixth but Minney would not allow any more.
In the opener, freshman Paige Geanangel was the hard-luck loser scattering just seven hits with two strikeouts and zero walks.
Geanangel gave up two two-out solo home runs to Oakland's Sarah Hartley in the bottom of the third and fifth innings while the Penguins had just one hit.
The Penguins were no-hit for 6.1 innings before Gibson laced a single to right field.
The Penguins and Golden Grizzlies close out the series with single game at Noon.
