Three Penguins Get 10-Plus Kills in Loss to Wright State

The Youngstown State volleyball team had three players finish with at least 10 kills in a three-set loss to Wright State on Friday evening at Beeghly Center. The set scores were 25-22, 29-27, 25-22.
Sam Brown posted a match-high 14 kills, Sarah Varcolla finished with 12 and Lori Vanbeek registered 10 for the Penguins. Wright State forced Brown into 11 attack errors, though, and the Penguins had 27 attack errors in the match. That created an 11-point edge for the Raiders, who snapped a five-match losing streak despite having 12 fewer kills than the Penguins. YSU also had 11 serving errors, six more than Wright State.
Katie Klusman led Wright State with 13 kills.
There were 10 ties and six lead changes in the opening set, and Youngstown State's final lead was 22-21 following a kill by Brown. Wright State called a timeout, and the Raiders scored the final four points on three straight kills and a YSU ball-handling error. Vanbeek had six kills in six attempts for the Penguins, who hit .333.
Youngstown State scored the first four points and led 9-4 after an Erin Kalahar kill. Wright State made its first of two runs in the set to tie the score at 10, but the Penguins answered and built a 15-11 advantage. That's when the Raiders scored 10 consecutive points behind Hannah Colvin's serve to go up 21-15. YSU worked its way back to tie the score at 22, and the Penguins had set points at 25-24 and 27-26 before the Raiders held on for the 29-27 win. Megan Hopkins and Maddie Lohmeier had blocks on the final two points of the set.
Wright State led from start to finish in the third set.
Youngstown State will host Valparaiso on Saturday at 2 p.m.
