Women's Soccer Opens League Play Against Northern Kentucky, Hosts St. Bonaventure

The Youngstown State continues its eight-match homestand and opens Horizon League play when it hosts Northern Kentucky, Friday, Sept. 18, at 7 p.m. at Farmers National Bank Field. The Penguins also host St. Bonaventure, Sunday, Sept. 20, at 1 p.m.
Last Week
The Penguins picked up a pair of victories to get back to the .500 mark (4-4). The Penguins defeated IPFW, 2-1, on Sept. 11, and knocked off Findlay in overtime, 3-2, on Sept. 13. Sophomore Katie Hackos and freshman Abby Kenski scored goals in the win over the Mastodons, while senior Macey Riese collected the game-winning goal against Findlay. Hackos and freshman Alison Green also scored during regulation against the Oilers.
Hackos Named Offensive POW
Sophomore Katie Hackos (York, Pa.) was named the Horizon League Women's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week, the league announced on Monday.
Hackos, a telecommunications major with a 3.31 GPA, led Youngstown State to a pair of wins over the weekend, scoring a goal in each match.
She scored her first career goal giving YSU a 1-0 lead in the Penguins' 2-1 against IPFW on Friday.
On Sunday, she added her second goal to tie the match 1-1 in YSU's 3-2 overtime win over Findlay.
Hackos, who earned the first weekly award of her career, took a total of eight shots and had five shots on goal.
Shot Caller
Sophomore Kyler Lum has definitely taken her chances at the net. Lum leads the Penguins and ranks eighth in the league with 17 shots and 10th with 2.12 shots per match.
Riese's Pieces
Senior defender Macey Riese has been taking advantage of her rare offensive opportunities over the past two seasons. After not attempting a shot during her freshman and sophomore seasons, Riese has tallied three goals, 17 total shots and six shots on goal over the last 26 matches. She ranks third on the team with nine shots. Riese posted her first career game-winning goal in a 3-2 overtime win against Findlay on Sept. 13.
Green Space
Freshman Alison Green stepped up big for the Penguins in a crucial moment. Green, who is tied for the team lead in scoring with Katie Hackos, scored her second career goal in a big moment. Trailing Findlay, 1-0, in the first half, Green tied the match up in the ninth minute. Green took a cross from Alex Kitchart in the left corner and pushed a shot into the lower left corner of the goal.
About Northern Kentucky
This is just the second meeting between Youngstown State and Northern Kentucky and the first since 2012. The Norse defeated the Penguins, 2-1, in the only previous meeting at Stambaugh Stadium. The Norse enter the week with an overall record of 4-1 and are coming off a 1-0 loss to Illinois. Macy Hamblin leads the Norse with eight points on two goals and four assists, while Jessica Frey leads the team with three goals. Goalkeeper Brooke Schocker is 4-1 with a shutout and two combined shutouts, 15 saves and a save percentage of .882.
About St. Bonaventure
This is the third meeting between Youngstown State and St. Bonaventure and the Bonnies own a 2-0 advantage in the all-time series. St. Bonaventure defeated the Penguins, 6-1, in 1996, and 6-1, in 1997. The Bonnies enter the week with a 3-3-2 overall mark. Leading the Bonnies is Abby Maiell with 12 points on five goals and two assists. Lauren Hill has scored three goals.
