Valparaiso pitchers Ryan Fritze and Trevor Haas combined for a three-hit shutout as the Crusaders beat the Youngstown State baseball team 5-0 on Sunday afternoon at Emory G. Bauer Field.

The Penguins and Crusaders split a doubleheader on Saturday, and Sunday's win gave the series win to Valparaiso.

YSU starter Jeremy Quinlan, making his first appearance in two weeks, matched Fritze and left after four shutout innings in which he allowed three base runners.

Valpo scored three two-out runs in the fifth inning with an infield single being the only hit in the inning. There were three Penguin errors in the inning, and all three runs that scored were unearned. The Crusaders went up 4-0 on Mark Johnson's two-out RBI double in the sixth, and three straight one-out singles led to another run in the seventh.

Fritze retired the first 11 batters he faced before walking Lorenzo Arcuri with two outs in the fourth inning. Jason Shirley has YSU's first hit with one out in the fifth, and Frank Califano and Brent Gillespie had hits in the sixth. YSU had the first two batters reach in the sixth and loaded the bases with one out, but Fritze got back-to-back strikeouts to get out of the inning.

Fritze retired the final five batters he faced, and Haas retired all six he faced.
