Milwaukee Rallies to Spoil Quinlan's Strong Start

Box Score

Milwaukee rallied with three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning and beat the Youngstown State baseball team in a one-run game for the second straight day with a 4-3 win on Sunday at Henry Aaron Field.

The late rally spoiled a strong start by Penguins sophomore Jeremy Quinlan, who allowed one run on four hits and three walks in six innings. His final pitch came with the score tied at 1-1, and YSU took the lead in the top of the seventh.

The bottom of the seventh started with an error, and two of the Panthers' three runs in the inning were unearned. Tyler Hermann tied the score with a double, and he scored the go-ahead run when Nick Unes followed with an RBI double. Unes scored what turned out to be the winning run on a passed ball.

Frank Califano's fourth hit of the game was a double to start the top of the ninth, and he scored on Alex Larivee's single. UWM closer Cody Peterson retired the next three hitters to earn his eighth save.

YSU led 1-0 after Kevin Hix reached on an error and scored on Josh Fitch's sacrifice fly in the third, and Quinlan didn't allow a hit until a leadoff single in the fourth. The right-hander got some big outs in the fifth and sixth innings to keep the Penguins in the game. He held UWM to just a run when it had the bases loaded with nobody out in the fifth, and the Panthers didn't score after having a runner at third with one out in the sixth.

Milwaukee reliever Cal Haley wiggled out of a similar jam in the top of the seventh in holding the Penguins to just one run. YSU loaded the bases with one out when Hix reached on an error and Califano and Fitch singled. Hix scored on a wild pitch to put the Penguins up 2-1, but Haley got pinch hitter Brent Gillespie to pop out to short and Lorenzo Arcuri to fly out to right center.

Califano had four of YSU's eight hits, and Hix scored twice.

Quinlan struck out five batters in his six innings in a no-decision, and Austin Lujano was charged with all three runs while recording one out in the seventh. Josh North got the final two outs in the seventh and pitched a scoreless eighth.

Youngstown State will begin an eight-game homestand on Tuesday when it hosts Bowling Green at 5:30 p.m.
