Women's Soccer Opens League Play at Home Against Wright State, Milwaukee

The Youngstown State women's soccer team opens Horizon League play this week with a pair of matches against Wright State and Milwaukee at Farmers National Bank Field. The Penguins host the Raiders, Wednesday, Sept. 24, at 6 p.m. and the Panthers, Saturday, Sept. 27, at 1 p.m.
Last Time Out
The Penguins (4-4-1, 0-0-0 Horizon League) dropped a hard-fought 1-0 overtime decision to Akron on Sept. 19. Senior goalkeeper Jackie Podolsky posted seven saves in the loss.
About Wright State
Wright State enters league play with an overall record of 3-6 but has won its last two matches, a 1-0 win over Morehead State on Sept. 21 and a 5-0 win over Tennessee Tech on Sept. 19. Bryce Hueber leads the Raiders with two goals while Natalie Sedlock, Addie Englehart and Ellie Ganz each have a goal and an assist. Four others have scored one goal for the Raiders.
The Wright State Series
This is the 18th meeting between Youngstown State and Wright State in a series that dates back to 1996. The Raiders own a 15-1-1 advantage in the all-time series. The Penguins lone win was a 2-1 overtime win in 2012. The Raiders have won the last two meetings by a score of 1-0 in the 2012 tournament and the 2013 regular season.
About Milwaukee
Milwaukee enters the week with an overall record of 3-6 and faces UIC on Wednesday, Sept. 24. Then Panthers have played a daunting schedule having faced No. 12 South Carolina and No. 18Tennessee, Oregon, Charleston, Boston College, DePaul and Marquette. Kelly Lewers leads the Panthers with four goals and two assists while Morgan LaPlant has three goals and three assists.
The Milwaukee Series
This is the 14th meeting between Youngstown State and Milwaukee in a series that dates back to 2001. The Panthers lead the all-time series 12-1, including winning the first 11 contests. The Penguins snapped that 11-match losing streak with a 2-1 win at Stambaugh Stadium in 2012. Last season, the Panthers scored two goals in the final 12 minutes to escape with a 3-2 victory.
Baquero Among League Leaders
Sophomore Kathy Baquero ranks among the Horizon League leaders in a couple of statistical categories. Baquero is tied for third with 22 shots, tied for fourth with 2.44 shots per game and tied for sixth with three goals scored.
Haney Moving Up Charts
With her goal against Tiffin on Sept. 16, senior Chelsey Haney has moved up the lists of a pair of YSU career statistical categories. Haney now ranks seventh with 28 career points and eighth with 10 career goals. She also ranks third with 130 career shots.
Podolsky in the Book
Senior goalkeeper Jackie Podolsky is also inching her way up in the YSU record book. Podolsky is Youngstown State's career leader with a 1.33 goals-against average, is tied for the career wins record with 12 careerand eighth with 152 career saves.
Riddle Me This
Freshman Sydney Riddle scored her first career goal in the 2-0 win over Tiffin on Sept. 16. Riddle scored with just 22 seconds left in the match.
Scoring Balance
The Penguins have scored 15 goals this season that have been scored by 11 different players. YSU also surpassed last season's goal total of 14.
Lum Assists
Against Malone on Sept. 5, freshman Kyler Lum was credited with assists on the goals scored by Macey Riese and Abby Kenski. She is the first YSU freshman to post two assists in a match since 2002.
