Women's Soccer Hosts Malone, Purdue

Coming off two straight wins, the Youngstown State women's soccer team returns home to host a pair of contests this week against Malone and Big Ten member Purdue. The Penguins welcome Malone, Friday, Sept. 5, at 6 p.m. and Purdue, Sunday, Sept. 7, at Noon. Both matches are at Farmers National Bank Field.
Last Time Out
The Penguins are coming off two victories last week with a 2-0 win over VMI on Aug. 29 and a 3-1 triumph over Robert Morris on Aug. 31. Against the Keydets, sophomore Kathy Baquero scored her team-best second goal of the season and junior Macey Riese posted her first career goal in the 2-0 win. Against Robert Morris, junior Katie Hohmann scored a goal and assistsed on another to lead the Penguins to the win. Senior Cara Armstrong and freshman Alex Kithcart also scored goals.
About Malone
The Pioneers open the 2014 season against Ohio Valley on Thursday, Sept. 4, at 1:30 p.m. in Canton, Ohio, before traveling to visit the Penguins on Friday.
The Malone Series
This is just the second meeting between Youngstown State and Malone. In the only previous meeting, Youngstown State came away with a 1-0 victory on Sept. 9, 1998.
About Purdue
The Boilermakers enter this week with a 3-1 record and visit Marshall, Thursday, Sept. 4, at 7 p.m. before trekking to Youngstown to face the Guins. Purdue has won three straight over Ohio, 2-0, Ball State, 2-0, and SIU-Edwardsville, 4-1, after a season-opening loss to Miami (Ohio), 1-0. Erica Arkans leads the Boilermakers with six points on three goals, while Maddy Williams has a goal and three assists.
Riese Earns Horizon League Honors
For the first time in her career, junior Macey Riese was named the Horizon League Defensive Player of the Week for Aug. 25-Sept. 1. Riese scored her first career goal in a 2-0 win over VMI on Aug. 29. She also led a defense that allowed just 11 total shots and three shots on goal in two matches.
Well-Balanced Offense
Over the last three matches, the Penguins scored seven goals - two against Vermont, two versus VMI and three against Robert Morris. Also, six different players have scored those seven goals.
Armstrong Nearing Top 10
With a goal against Robert Morris on Aug. 31, senior Cara Armstrong is now tied for 13th all-time with seven career goals. Armstrong scored three goals in each of the two previous seasons.
Hohmann Now Second
With two assists this season, junior midfielder Katie Hohmann has moved into second-place on the YSU career assist chart with 10. Hohmann just surpassed Lauren Brennan who had nine from 2007-10. She needs four more to tie the all-time record of 14 set by Missy Laforet from 1996-99.
Podolsky Picks Up 10th Win
Senior goalkeeper Jackie Podolskey picked up her win of the season on Aug. 31 against Robert Morris. It marked her 10th career win, which ranks second all-time. She needs two more to tie the all-time wins record of 12 set by Christine Handte from 1998-01. Poldolsky also ranks ninth with 130 career saves and needs seven more to move into eighth place.
Picked Sixth in Horizon League
The Penguins were picked to finish sixth in the Horizon League in a poll conducted by the league's head coaches. The Penguins received 25 total points. Milwaukee was predicted to win the league championship with 62 points and six first-place votes. The Panthers were followed by Oakland (51 points), Wright State (50), Detroit (46), Valparaiso (39). Following the Penguins were Cleveland State (24), Green Bay (15) and UIC (12).

The Penguins visit Duquesne, Friday, Sept. 12, at 7 p.m. and host Tiffin, Monday, Sept. 15, at 7 p.m. at Farmers National Bank Field.
