Women's Soccer Visits Duquesne Friday Night

The Youngstown State women's soccer team goes for its fourth win of the season when it visits Duquesne, Friday, Sept. 12, at 7 p.m. in Pittsburgh, Pa. Over the last four matches, the Penguins own a record of 3-0-1.
Last Time Out
Last weekend, the Penguins defeated Malone, 5-0, on Sept. 5 and salvaged a 1-1 tied against Big Ten member Purdue on Sept. 7.
Against Malone, five different players scored goals, including freshman Abby Kenski and sophomore Samantha Vaughan, who each scored their first career goals. Senior Chelsey Haney scored her first goal of the year while sophomore Kathy Baquero posted her team-high third goal and junior Macey Riese recorded her second goal of the season. Freshman Kyler Lum tallied two assists.
In the Purdue match, the Penguins trailed 1-0 at the half before Tyesha Kizer scored her first goal of the season just three minutes into the second half. Senior Jackie Podolsky notched 10 saves, including a stop on a potential game-winning penalty kick in the 62nd minute.
About Duquesne
The Dukes enter the game with an overall record of 1-1-2 and are 0-0-2 at home. Duquesne lost to Robert Morris, 3-2, defeated Pittsburgh, 1-0 and tied both Buffalo and Niagara, 0-0. Maggie Mayo, Amy Vinopal and Caroline Lacy have scored goals for the Dukes.
The Duquesne Series
This is the eighth meeting between Youngstown State and Duquesne in a series that dates back to 1996. The Dukes own a 6-1 advantage in the all-time series and won the first six contests. In the last meeting in 2012, the Penguins escaped with a 1-0 victory.
Last Time Against Duquesne
In the last meeting with Duquesne, the Penguins and Dukes fought through a scoreless match for more than 84 minutes. Tyesha Kizer scored the match's lone goal with 5:11 left in the second half to lift the Penguins to the 1-0 win. Chelsey Haney and Katie Hohmann were credited with assists on the goal.
Podolsky Named Defensive Player of the Week
Youngstown State senior goalkeeper Jackie Podolsky has been named the Horizon League Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced on Monday.
This is the third career weekly award for Podolsky and the first this season. Podolsky won the award on Oct. 1 and Oct. 22 in 2012.
Last week, Podolsky helped the Penguins to a 1-0-1 record with a 5-0 win over Malone on Sept. 5 and a 1-1 tie against Big Ten member Purdue.For the week, Podolsky collected 10 saves and a 0.58 goals-against average in 155 minutes in the net.
All 10 of her saves came in the 1-1 double-overtime tie against the Boilermakers. Her biggest save of the match came in 62nd minute when she blocked a potential game-winning penalty kick by Purdue's Maddy Williams. She faced a total of 31 shots, including 17 in the second half, and 11 shots on goal.
Haney Moving Up Charts
With her goal against Malone on Sept. 5, senior Chelsey Haney has moved up the lists of a pair of YSU career statistical categories. Haney now ranks eighth with 25 career points and tied for eighth with nine career goals. She also ranks fourth with 122 career shots and needs eight more to move into third place.
Scoring Streak
The Penguins have scored at least one goal in the last five games. It is just the third time in school history the Penguins have reached that feat. The other two times were in 2012. Also before the Purdue match, the Penguins set a school mark with multiple goals in four consecutive matches.
Lum Assists
Against Malone, freshman Kyler Lum was credited with assists on the goals scored by Macey Riese and Abby Kenski. She is the first YSU freshman to post two assists in a match since 2002.
Podolsky in the Book
Senior goalkeeper is also inching her way up in the YSU record book. Podolsky is Youngstown State;s career leader with a 1.31 goals-against average, ranks second with 11 career wins and eighth with 140 career saves.
Scoring Balance
The Penguins have scored 13 goals in the last five matches. Those 13 goals have been scored by 10 different players. YSU is one goal shy of matching 2013's season total.
