Pitching Gems Lead Softball to Sweep of Niagara, 6-0, 3-2

Youngstown -- Senior Casey Crozier and junior Kayla Haslett each pitched complete games and led the Youngstown State softball team to a doubleheader sweep of Niagara, 6-0, 3-2, on Thursday afternoon at the YSU Softball Field.
Crozier, who picked up her 15th win, fired a two-hit shutout with nine strikeouts and Haslett allowed just four hits, one earned run and struck out three as the Penguins improve to 25-20 overall. Haslett improved to 8-7 on the year and record her ninth complete game of the season.
Niagara falls to 13-27 on the season.
In the opener, senior Samantha Snodgrass went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI while senior Sarah Ingalls and freshman Sarah Dowd each had run-scoring doubles. Senior Courtney Ewing also drove in a run.
Ingalls' one-out double to left field that scored Castiglione in the bottom of the third inning sparked a three-run frame for the Penguins. After sophomore Katie Smallcomb reached on an error that scored Ingalls, Snodgrass ripped a double to left-center field to plate Smallcomb from first.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Penguins extended their lead to 5-0 after a Dowd RBI-double and a run-scoring single by Ewing.
Snodgrass scored the Penguins' final run in the bottom of the fifth after singling to center, moving to second on a ground out, advancing to third on a passed ball and scoring on a wild pitch.
In game two, Niagara jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the third inning before freshman Darcella Blakey tripled home freshman Maria Lacatena in the bottom half of the frame to cut the deficit to 2-1.
The Penguins knotted the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth inning on a doubleto right-center field by Smallcomb, who went 2-for-3, that scored Haslett.
Smallcomb then led off the bottom of the sixth with a single and advanced to third on an error by the left fielder. Smallcomb scored the go-ahead run on a passed ball.
The Penguins visit Horizon League foe Oakland for a three-game series, April 26-27, in Rochester, Mich.
