Baseball Starts Week With Loss at Penn State

Box Score

Penn State scored seven runs in the first inning and the final seven runs of the game in a 15-2 victory over the Youngstown State baseball team on Tuesday evening at Medlar Field.

Phil Lipari singled and scored, and Kris Moules singled with an RBI for the Penguins, who return home to face Pittsburgh on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.

Six different Nittany Lions players had two hits, and Taylor Skerpon drove in four runs.

YSU starter Anthony Konders was charged with all seven runs, six of which were earned, in the first inning. He surrendered four hits and walked three batters, and six Penguins pitchers went on to issue 11 walks.

Penn State scored seven runs on five hits and an error in the first inning, but YSU started to close the gap by holding Penn State to one run over the next three innings and scoring twice in the fourth. Both Penguins runs in the top of the fourth came when Lipari and Alex Larivee scored on an error on Kris Moules's grounder. YSU's fourth inning ended on a double play.

The Penguins gave the Nittany Lions an extra out in the fifth, and it resulted in three runs. Nic Manuppelli struck out J.J. White with two outs, but White reached on a wild pitch to prolong the inning. Penn State then added three runs in the sixth and another in the eighth.

Penn State starter Nick Hedge allowed both YSU runs in 3.1 innings to earn the win. The Penguins struck out just twice against the five Nittany Lions pitchers.
