Wright State Takes Game Two 5-1

Box Score

Two Wright State pitchers combined to hold the Youngstown State baseball team to one run on six hits, and the Raiders took game two of the three-game series 5-1 on Saturday afternoon at Eastwood Field.

Wright State scored three runs in the first inning off YSU starter Brendon Shoemake, but Shoemake and Robert Switka held the Raiders to two runs over the final eight frames.

Freshman outfielder Alex Larivee was 2-for-4, and fellow freshman Joe King registered the first RBI of his career.

Shoemake was charged with all five runs in four innings of work. He allowed just five hits, but he walked four batters, and three of those came in to score. He walked Brad Macciocchi to start the game, and he issued a two-out walk to Kieston Greene to put two runners on. Andrew McCafferty doubled inside the first-base bag to plate Macciocchi, and Sean Murphy followed with a soft single to right on an 0-2 pitch to put the Raiders up 3-0.

Wright State scored its other two runs on Murphy's infield single in the third and Joe Ford's sacrifice fly in the fourth.

Wright State starter Joey Hoelzel faced one above the minimum through five innings, and he was able to work out of a big jam in the sixth to keep a four-run lead. He allowed three straight one-out singles to Jason Shirley, Phil Lipari and Larivee as YSU loaded the bases. Hoelzel got King to ground out softly between the mound and first base, and he struck out Josh White on a full-count offering.

The Penguins had a baserunner in each of the final three innings, including two in the ninth, but were turned away each time.

Hoelzel allowed one run on five hits while striking out nine to improve to 4-2. Switka was impressive in relief, holding the Raiders to two hits and two walks while fanning four in five scoreless innings.

Youngstown State and Wright State are scheduled to play their series finale on Sunday at 1 p.m. Weather-related updates will be available on YSUsports.com, @YSUsports on Twitter and through the YSU Front Row mobile app.
