Women's Soccer Preps For Critical Road Matches at Detroit, Valparaiso

After a three-match homestand, the Youngstown State women's soccer team gears up for a pair of Horizon League road matches at Detroit and Valparaiso. The Penguins visit the Titans, Wednesday, Oct. 8, at 3 p.m. and the Crusaders, Saturday, Oct. 11, at 8 p.m.
Last Time Out
The Penguins are coming off a 1-0 victory over Oakland on Oct. 4. Sophomore Kathy Baquero scored at the 13:05 mark for the match's only goal. It also marked the program's first victory over the Golden Grizzlies.
About Detroit
The Titans enter the week with and overall record of 4-5-1 and a 2-1 mark in the Horizon League. Detroit is coming off a 1-0 win over UIC on Oct. 4 and a 2-0 loss to Wright State on Sept. 27. Alyssa Riley leads the Titans with four goals while Alyssa Lotito has a team-best four assists.
The Detroit Series
This is the 17th meeting between Youngstown State and Detroit in series that dates back to 2000. The Titans have won 16 straight over the Penguins, including a 1-0 victory at Farmers National Bank Field in 2013. The last time in Detroit, the Titans defeated the Penguins, 2-0, in 2012.
About Valpo
Valparaiso enters the week with an overall record 6-1-4 and a 2-0 mark in the Horizon League. The Crusaders, who are unbeaten in 10 straight matches, are coming off a 2-1 win over Loyola on Oct. 4 and 1-0 overtime victory over Cleveland State on Sept. 27. Prior to hosting the Penguins, the Crusaders visit UIC, Wednesday, Oct. 8. Rita Craven leads the Crusaders with four goals and nine points, while April Cronin and Vanesa Abad each have three goals. Goalkeeper Sydney Galvez-Dailey has seven shutouts and a 6-1-4 record.
The Valpo Series
This is the 14th meeting between Youngstown State and Valparaiso in a series that dates back to 1999. The Crusaders own a 9-1-3 advantage in the all-time series and won, 1-0, last season at Farmers National Bank Field. The Penguins defeated Valparaiso, 1-0, in 2012 in Valparaiso. The Penguins tied the Crusaders in 2011, 0-0, in 2010, 1-1, and in 2008, 0-0. In 2008, the Penguins defeated the Crusaders in shootout in the Horizon League tournament, but the result is classified as a tie.
Wins Tied For Second Most
With the victory over Oakland, the Penguins recorded their sixth win of the season. It marks the third time in school history the Penguins have won six matches and is tied for second on the single-season wins list.
Big Moment Baquero
Sophomore Kathy Baquero leads the Penguins and ranks tied for third in the Horizon League with five goals. Baquero is also tied for the league lead with three game winning goals. Baquero had game-winners against Horizon League opponents Milwaukee on Sept. 27 and Oakland on Oct. 4. She also had the game-winning goal against VMI on Aug. 30.
Pitching Shutouts
The Penguins' 1-0- win over Oakland on Oct. 4 marked the fourth time this season they have help an opponent scoreless. Goalkeepers Jackie Podolsky and Katie Montgomery each have a shutout and each have two combined shutouts. The four shutouts this season ranked tied for the second most in school history. The Penguins had four in both 2012 and 2011. The school record for shutouts is six in 2008.
Podolsky Sets Win Mark
With the 1-0 win over Oakland on Oct. 4, senior Jackie Podolsky became Youngstown State's all-time wins leader with 13. She broke the record of 12 set by Christine Handte from 1998-2001.
Penguins' Offense Ranks Near Top
Youngstown State has been one of the top offensive teams in the Horizon League this season. The Penguins rank second in the league with 15.55 shots per match, third with 5.09 points and 1.64 assists per match. The Guins' 19 goals are the fourth most scored in the league this season.
Podolsky in the Book
Senior goalkeeper Jackie Podolsky is also inching her way up in the YSU record book. Podolsky is Youngstown State's career leader with a 1.29 goals-against average and ranks eighth with 158 career saves.
Scoring Uprise
The Penguins have posted 20 goals this season that have been scored by 11 different players. The Penguins also have 19 assists by 11 different players for a total of 59 points. That point total is tied for the fifth highest in school history while the 19 assists rank fourth on the single-season chart. YSU's 20 goals scored ranks tied sixth on the single-season list.
Haney Leads League
With five assists, senior Chelsey Haney is tied for the Horizon League lead. She also ranks fifth in league with 11 total points. In the YSU annals, Haney ranks fourth with 32 total points, tied for seventh with 11 goals, and third with 10 assists.
Hohmann Now Second
With her assist on Kathy Baquero's goal against Oakland, junior Katie Hohmann moved into sole possession of second place on the YSU career assists chart with 11. She also moved into a tie for 10th place on the career points list with 21. Hohmann has five career goals to go along with her 11 assists.
Riddle Me This
Freshman Sydney Riddle scored her first career goal in the 2-0 win over Tiffin on Sept. 16. Riddle scored with just 22 seconds left in the match.
Lum Assists
Against Malone on Sept. 5, freshman Kyler Lum was credited with assists on the goals scored by Macey Riese and Abby Kenski. She is the first YSU freshman to post two assists in a match since 2002.

After the Valparaiso match, the Penguins are idle for 11 days before they host Cleveland State on Senior Day, Wednesday, Oct. 22, at 7 p.m.
