Women's Soccer Hosts Oakland Saturday Night

The Youngstown State women's soccer team seeks its second straight Horizon League victory when it hosts Oakland, Saturday, Oct. 4. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Farmers National Bank Field.
Last Week
The Penguins are coming off a 1-0-1 week after tying Wright State, 1-1, on Sept. 24 and knocking off Horizon League preseason favorite Milwaukee, 3-2, in double overtime on Sept. 27.
About Oakland
Oakland enters the match with a 3-8-1 overall record and a 1-1-0 mark in the Horizon League. The Golden Grizzlies open league play with a 3-0 loss at Valparaiso on Sept. 24, but defeated Green Bay, 2-1, on Sept. 27. The Golden Grizzlies, who are 1-6-1 in away matches, are led by Kyla Kellerman's four goals. Alice Palmer has two goals and three assists.
The Oakland Series
This is the ninth meeting between Youngstown State and Oakland in a series that dates back to 1998. Oakland has won all eight previous meetings, including two matches in 2013. The Golden Grizzlies won the first match, 2-0, in the regular season and 6-2 in the Horizon League tournament. Both matches were in Rochester, Mich.
Haney Reaps Awards
Senior Chelsey Haney had a huge week for the Penguins. She was named the Horizon League Offensive Player of the Week and made the CS360 Primetime Performers Weekly Honor Roll. Haney was part of three of the Penguins' four goals scored last week with a goal and two assists. Haney was credited with an assist on Abby Kenski's game-tying goal against Wright State. Against Milwaukee, Haney scored her third goal of the season to tie the match at 1-1 in the 56th minute. She also assisted on Kathy Baquero's game-winning goal in the second overtime.
Baquero Among League Leaders
Sophomore Kathy Baquero's game-winner against Milwaukee marked her team-leading fourth goal of the year and her second game-winning score. She also ranks tied for fourth in the Horizon League in goals scored and sixth with 0.36 goals per game.
Penguins' Offense Ranks Near Top
Youngstown State has been one of the top offensive teams in the Horizon League this season. The Penguins rank second in the league with 15.55 shots per match, third with 5.09 points and 1.64 assists per match. The Guins' 19 goals are the fourth most scored in the league this season.
Podolsky in the Book
Senior goalkeeper Jackie Podolsky is also inching her way up in the YSU record book. Podolsky is Youngstown State's career leader with a 1.33 goals-against average, is tied for the career wins record with 12 careerand eighth with 158 career saves.
Riddle Me This
Freshman Sydney Riddle scored her first career goal in the 2-0 win over Tiffin on Sept. 16. Riddle scored with just 22 seconds left in the match.
Scoring Uprise
The Penguins have posted 19 goals this season that have been scored by 11 different players. The Penguins also have 18 assists by 11 different players for a total of 56 points. That point total is the sixth highest in school history while the 18 assists rank fourth on the single-season chart. YSU's 19 goals scored ranks tied sixth on the single-season list.
Lum Assists
Against Malone on Sept. 5, freshman Kyler Lum was credited with assists on the goals scored by Macey Riese and Abby Kenski. She is the first YSU freshman to post two assists in a match since 2002.
Haney Leads League
With five assists, senior Chelsey Haney is tied for the Horizon League lead. She also ranks fifth in league with 11 total points. In the YSU annals, Haney ranks fourth with 32 total points, tied for seventh with 11 goals, and tied for second with 10 assists. She is tied with teammate Katie Hohmann on the career assist chart.
