Milwaukee Sweeps Baseball to Win Horizon League Title

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Milwaukee captured its first Horizon League regular season title since 2001 after sweeping a doubleheader from the Youngstown State baseball team, 12-7 and 8-0, on Saturday afternoon at Henry Aaron Field.

In game one, Milwaukee scored seven runs in four innings off YSU starter Patrick O'Brien and five more in the fifth and sixth to go up 12-1. The Penguins scored six of their seven runs in the ninth inning, and four of those six tallies came after there were two outs.

Sam Koenig doubled in Ryan Solberg for Milwaukee in the second inning, and Mitch Ghelfi had an RBI triple in UWM's two-run third.  YSU's Neil Schroth led off the top of the third with a double, and a wild pitch and ground out by Drew Dosch allowed the Penguins to cut the margin to 3-1.

Derek Peake tripled and scored on Luke Meeteer's infield single with one out in the fourth, and Will Fadness delivered the big blow two batter later, a three-run homer to left that put the Panthers ahead 7-1.

Koenig homered in the two-run fifth, and three Panthers had RBI singles in the sixth as they went ahead 12-1. Mike Accardi had a two-run single, Dosch and Craig Goubeaux hit RBI doubles, and Padraic Williams had an RBI single for the Penguins in the ninth. YSU's final run came in on a wild pitch with the bases loaded, and the Penguins re-loaded the bases before David Saluga grounded out to end the game.

Dosch was 3-for-5 with two RBIs and a run scored, and Goubeaux was 2-for-2 off the YSU bench. Meeteer had four of Milwaukee's 21 hits, and eight the Panthers' nine starters registered multiple hits.

O'Brien allowed seven run on 11 hits in four innings, and reliever Russ Harless was charged with five runs on 10 hits in four innings. Conference pitcher-of-the-year candidate Jake Long allowed one run on five hits and struck out eight in seven innings for Milwaukee. Jonathan Nick allowed the six runs in the ninth, and Brian Keller came on to record the final out.

In game two, Panthers starter Cale Tassi threw a complete game shutout and limited the Penguins to six hits while striking out six. YSU starter Blake Aquadro also went the distance and allowed just seven hits, but he walked five and gave up a pair of two-run home runs.

Fadnesss hit an RBI single in the first, and Milwaukee scored a run in both the third and fourth innings to go up 3-0. The Penguins stranded two runners in both the second and fourth innings.

Ghelfi hit a two-run homer in the sixth to put the Panthers up 5-0, and Meeteer's two-run blast made it 7-0 after seven. The eighth run scored on a double play in the eighth.

Nick DiNello and Devin Higgins had two hits apiece for the Penguins in game two.

Youngstown State and Milwaukee will conclude their three-game series on Sunday at 2 p.m. Eastern.
