The Youngstown State volleyball team is in the middle of its
spring practice season, and the Penguins will host a six-team
tournament this weekend in the Stambaugh Stadium gymnasiums.
YSU will host defending Horizon League champion Cleveland State,
Buffalo, Gannon and Wheeling Jesuit, and a team of Penguin
volleyball alumni will also participate in the tournament. Play
will begin at 10 a.m. and conclude around 5 p.m. Fans are invited
to attend, and admission is free.
Cleveland State finished 23-7 in 2012 and won the Horizon League
regular season and tournament titles. Buffalo was 10-18, Gannon was
29-6 and Wheeling Jesuit was 38-3. The YSU alumni planning on
attending are Ebony Barbosa, Kelsi Bitter, Ruth Boscaljon, Karla
Everhart, Amanda Gray, Brittany Grove, Dana Leslie, Tasha Miller
(Reid) and Kaitlin O'Hara.
This will be the second weekend of spring competition for the
Penguins. They won eight of the 12 sets they played last weekend
against Duquesne and Robert Morris.
"We passed the ball extremely well last week, and we served the
ball tough but had too many errors," YSU head coach Mark Hardaway
said. "In the spring, it is all about getting better and working on
new things. This team is working hard and continues to get better.
They are hungry to improve on what they accomplished this past
fall. Practices are becoming very competitive, and I really believe
this group can do some really good things next fall."
