Women's Soccer Preps For a Pair of Horizon League Matches

The Youngstown State women's soccer team is gearing up for a busy week with a pair of Horizon League matches. The Penguins visit Cleveland State, Wednesday, at 7 p.m. and host Valparaiso on Homecoming, Saturday, at Noon, at Farmers National Bank Field.
The Penguins (3-9-1 overall, 1-2 Horizon League) are coming off a 2-0 loss to Horizon League member Oakland on Oct. 12.
Penguins' Leaders
Leading the Penguins has been senior Brittany Dowd and juniors Cara Armstrong and Chelsey Haney. Dowd, Armstrong and Haney each have two goals and four points. Sophomore Katie Hohmann also has four total points on a goal and two assists. Junior goalkeeper Jackie Podolsky leads the squad with 52 saves and has all three victories.
Haney Earned POW
Junior Chelsey Haney was named the Horizon League on Oct. 7 after scoring the game-winning goal against Green Bay on Oct. 5. It marked the second game-winning goal of the season for Haney.
About Cleveland State
The Vikings (7-6-1 overall, 1-2 Horizon League) have an impressive home record of 6-1-1 compared to a 1-5 mark on the road. Leading Cleveland State is Vickie Havas with seven goals, three assists, and 17 total points. Amanda Sivic is second on the team with four goals and four assists. Goalkeeper Sarah Wood owns a record of 6-6-1 with 92 saves and three shutouts.
The Cleveland State Series
This is the 11th meeting between Youngstown State and Cleveland State in a series that dates back to 2004. The Vikings own a 6-3-1 advantage in the all-time series and have won three straight. Last season, the Penguins defeated the Vikings, 3-2, at Stambaugh Stadium, but were forced to forfeit the game due to using an ineligible player. The last time the Penguins defeated the Vikings was a 1-0 victory in 2009.
About Valparaiso
The Crusaders enter the week with a 7-5-2 overall mark and a 1-2-1 record in the Horizon League. Valparaiso owns a 7-1-1 home record, but are winless (0-4-1) on the road. Jenny Fassbinder leads the squad with three goals and seven total points while Haley Chmela has two goals and two assists. Goalkeeper Kristen Manski has seven shutouts, 63 saves, and a record of 7-5-2.
The Valparaiso Series
This is the 13th meeting between Youngstown State and Valparaiso in a series that dates back to 1999. The Crusaders own a 1-8-3 advantage in the all-time series, but over the last five years, the series has been pretty even. Each team has a 1-1-3 record in the last five games, and last season, the Penguins were victories, 1-0, in Valparaiso, Ind.
