Canfield, Ohio -- A total of six home runs, three in each game, by six different players helped the Youngstown State softball team to a doubleheader split against UIC on Sunday afternoon. The Guins dropped the first game, 11-8, before taking the nightcap, 9-7.

Senior Haley Thomas, who went 4-for-8 on the day, also tied the single-season hits record of 64 set by Amanda Berry in 2003.

In the nightcap, sophomore Samantha Snodgrass clobbered a two-out three-run home run in the bottom of the fourth inning to break a 4-4 tie and give the Guins a 7-4 lead.

UIC got back within one, 7-6, with a two-run fifth inning but senior Kristen Philen, who had two hits and two RBIs in each game, led off the bottom of the fifth with a solo home run to give the Guins an 8-6 edge.

Senior Jordan Ingalls, who went 3-for-3 and tied a school mark with four runs scored, slammed a towering solo home run to center field to give the Guins a 9-6 cushion.

The Flames added one more run in the top of the seventh on a solor home run by Courtney Heeley.

The Guins jumped out to a 3-0 lead after one inning when Ingalls singled home Thomas, who led off the game with a double.

Three batters later, junior Sarah Gabel drove in two runs with a two-out single up the middle.

After the Flames cut the lead to 3-2, Philen singled to left field with the bases loaded to score Ingalls to give YSU a 4-2 advantage.

UIC, though, plated two runs in the top of the fifth to knot the game at 4-4.

In the opener, which was a continuation of the game that started Saturday afternoon, Thomas went 3-of-4 with a home run and junior Vicky Rumph was 3-for-3 to lead the Guins' 14-hit attack.

Junior Sarah Gabel, who was 2-for-4, and sophomore Courtney Ewing each had home runs for the Penguins while Ingalls went 2-for-5.

Gabel's two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning capped a four-run first and gave the Guins a 4-2 lead.

UIC, though, took a 7-4 advantage with a four-run fourth inning, three of which were unearned.

Ewing slammed a two-run homer and Thomas followed with a solo shot to tie the game back at 7-7 at the end of four.

The Flames regained the lead 8-7 in the top of the fifth, but YSU again responeded to tie the game at 8-8.

Gabel led off the frame with a triple to left field and scored on Philen's double to left-center field.

The Guins had the bases loaded with one out but left the runners stranded.

UIC capitalized on two seventh-inning errors by the Guins and scored three unearned runs to escape with the 11-8 victory.
