Box Score Lexington, Va. -- VMI scored six runs in the
first four innings and tacked on five more in the sixth to beat the
Youngstown State baseball team 11-3 on Saturday at Gray-Minor
Stadium.
YSU freshman Weston Weiss had two of YSU's six hits, and
Drew Dosch and Jeremy Banks both drove in runs. Jason Shirley stole
the first two bases of his career.
Gary Leclair drove in three runs, and Rob Dickinson was 3-for-3
for the Keydets.
All three of VMI's runs in the second came after YSU
starter Patrick O'Brien retired the first two hitters. Nick
Dwyer capped a stretch of three straight singles to plate the first
run, and Leclair followed a walk with a two-run single up the
middle.
YSU got an unearned run in the top of the third when Phil Lipari
walked and scored on an error, but George Piccirilli homered for
VMI in the bottom half to make the score 4-1. The Keydets upped the
lead to 6-1 in the fourth when Leclair doubled in a run and scored
from second on a steal and errant throw.
Dosch doubled home Lipari in the fifth to make the score just
6-2, but the Penguins' bullpen surrendered five runs in the
sixth to make the score 11-2. VMI had three hits in the inning, the
biggest of which was a bases-loaded two-run single from Dickinson.
The other runs scored on an RBI double Jacob Morley, a bases-loaded
walk and a wild pitch.
Banks doubled home Shirley in the seventh for the final
tally.
O'Brien was charged with the loss, allowing five earned
runs on nine hits while striking out four in five innings. All five
runs in the sixth were charged to Ryan Krokos, but three of those
came after he exited.
Campbell Henkel allowed just one earned run on three hits and
three walks in six innings for VMI to earn the win.
The Penguins and Keydets will play the final game of their
series on Sunday at 2 p.m.
