Canfield -- The Youngstown State softball program dropped a hard-fought 4-3 contest in game one before falling 13-3 in the second contest of a doubleheader to Green Bay on Saturday afternoon at McCune Park. Prior to the game, YSU saluted three seniors - Erin Gilmour, Kim Klonowski and Kristina Rendle - who were playing in their final home series.
In game one, the Penguins (22-23 overall and 5-15 in the Horizon League) fell behind 3-0 after the Phoenix (23-22 and 9-13) scored twice in the third inning and one in the fourth. But YSU broke through in the bottom of the fifth off Green Bay starter Katie Cooney.
With Sarah Gabel at first and one out, Amanda Palmore drilled a two-run homer to left field pulling the Guins within 3-2. YSU went back-to-back home runs when Kristen Philen drilled a solo shot on an 0-2 offering from Cooney tying the game at three. It was Palmore's first homer of the season and Philen's second of the campaign.
But in the seventh inning, Green Bay used the long-ball to its advantage when Alli Rivera drilled a solo shot off Hana Somogyi (9-10) for what turned out to be the game-winning run. YSU threatened in the seventh with Philen at second base and two outs. But Cooney battled Haley Thomas in a 10-pitch at bat that ended with a strikeout to end the game.
The Penguins jumped out quickly in the second when game when Jordan Ingalls belted a two-run homer in the bottom of the first inning. In the top of the second, Paige Newtolls led off the inning with a solo home run and as the wind picked up, the Phoenix took advantage. UWGB scored seven runs in the inning, capped by a grand slam by Kendra Woepse.
YSU had the bases loaded and one out in the third, but could not score before picking up a run in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI-single by Thomas.
Green Bay added three runs in the top of the fifth and three in the sixth for the final outcome. Casey Crozier (12-11) was saddled with the loss in game two.
In the doubleheader, Thomas had four hits to lead the Penguins.
The Penguins and Phoenix conclude their respective seasons on Sunday with a single game at noon.
