The Youngstown State baseball team will try to stave off
elimination when it takes on No. 2 UIC this morning at the Horizon
League Baseball Championship. First pitch is set for 11 a.m.
The sixth-seeded Penguins beat No. 3 Milwaukee 4-2 on Wednesday,
but they were sent to the losers' bracket with a 12-0 loss to
top-seeded Wright State on Friday evening. UIC lost 11-9 to No. 4
Valparaiso before eliminating Milwaukee just before 12:30 a.m.
Saturday with a 1-0 win.
The winner of today's contest will play another elimination game
at 7 p.m. against the loser of the winners' bracket final contest
between Wright State and Valparaiso.
YSU will have plenty of motivation for revenge against the
Flames. UIC defeated Youngstown State in all five meetings during
the regular season, including a three-game sweep last week to wrap
up the regular season. UIC also eliminated YSU from the tournament
last year.
Youngstown State will send sophomore left-hander Bill Turosky to the
mound, and UIC will counter with sophomore Tim Suminski. Turosky
went 1-2 with a 6.21 ERA during the regular season. He allowed four
earned runs in six innings against the Flames eight days ago.
Suminski will be making his first start of the season after 17
relief appearances. He allowed two runs in 1.1 innings against the
Penguins over two relief appearances last week.
