Box Score Syracuse, N.Y. -- It took almost twice as long
as planned, but the Youngstown State baseball team finally beat Le
Moyne 6-4 in 17 innings on Sunday afternoon at Dick Rockwell
Field.
After YSU squandered a 4-1 lead in the ninth, reliever Bill
Turosky came on and allowed just four base-runners in seven shutout
innings. Jeremy Banks' RBI triple with nobody out in the 17th broke
an 11-inning scoring drought for the Penguins.
Sixteen different Penguins saw action, and Le Moyne had 14
players make an appearance. Eight pitchers were used, and they
threw a total of 468 pitches.
YSU starter Robert Switka allowed just one run on six hits and
did not walk a batter in seven innings. Nic Manuppelli threw a
scoreless eighth, but Le Moyne tied the game with three runs off
Padraic Williams in the ninth.
"I can't say enough about this team and the way it stays
positive with each other," YSU head coach Rich Pasquale said. "We
just kept pressing forward."
"Switka had a great outing and worked ahead all afternoon.
Turosky was awesome in relief and even had to hit four times. He
threw strikes and pitched to contact for outs."
YSU split Saturday's doubleheader with Le Moyne and claimed a
weekend series for the first time this season.
The Penguins jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first and held a
4-1 advantage after adding a run in the fifth. That stood until Le
Moyne tied the score in the bottom of the ninth.
In the first, singles by Phil Lipari and Iacobucci and a walk to
Banks loaded the bases with one out. Greg Dissinger hit the first
pitch of his at bat into left center for a two-run single, and
Banks scored later on Dan Hurlimann's ground out.
Kody O'Connor tripled and scored on a ground out in the second
to put Le Moyne on the board. YSU reclaimed its three-run advantage
in the fifth with Padraic Williams reached on a two-out single and
scored on Iacobucci's double.
Switka retired the final seven batters he faced, and Manuppelli
allowed just a one-out single in the eighth.
After Williams struck out the first batter in the ninth,
O'Connor got the offense going with a solo homer to right. A walk,
single and two wild pitches allowed the second run to score, and
Zach Wiley scored the tying run on Vincent Redmond's squeeze bunt
with one out.
The Penguins stranded runners in scoring position in the 10th,
11th, 13th and 14th innings before finally breaking through in the
17th. Iacobucci reached to start the inning on a throwing error,
and he scored on Banks' triple to right with the hit-and-run on.
Mitko then brought in Banks with a single to left on an 0-2
pitch.
Erik Okleson allowed a harmless single in the bottom of the 17th
to earn his first collegiate save.
Iacobucci finished 4-for-8, and Banks was 3-for-7 for Youngstown
State, which outhit Le Moyne 16-13. O'Connor was 3-for-7 for the
Dolphins.
Le Moyne's Jerome Werniuk allowed four runs on eight hits in six
innings and was in line for the loss until the ninth-inning rally.
Ed Kohout threw eight shutout innings in relief, and Mike Anarumo
allowed the two runs in the 17th after entering in the 15th.
YSU will play at Akron on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
