Box Score Pittsburgh, Pa. -- Pittsburgh scored six runs
on seven hits in the first inning and maintained the lead
throughout in a 7-2 win over the Youngstown State baseball team on
Tuesday evening. The game was called after five innings due to
rain, and first pitch was delayed by a half hour due to
wetness.
The Panthers had four singles, a double and two triples in the
first inning as 10 batters went to the plate. Three of the runs
scored after there were two outs.
The Penguins did not manage a hit off starter Kevin Dooley in
three innings, and David Leon greeted reliever Matt Wotherspoon
with a leadoff double in the fourth inning. Leon went to third on a
balk and scored one batter later on Jeremy Banks' single. Banks
then went to second on a passed ball and came home on Joe
Iacobucci's RBI single.
Another two-out run in the fourth put Pittsburgh up 7-2, and
that was the final score of the contest.
Youngstown State had a chance in the fifth to cut more into the
lead when Phil Lipari singled and Dan Hurlimann walked to start the
inning. They advanced on a double steal, and Armani Johnson reached
on an infield error to load the bases. Hurlimann was doubled up at
second base after a nice catch by centerfielder Zach Duggan, and
Drew Dosch struck out to end the inning.
Casey Roche tripled to lead off the bottom of the fifth, but
that was the final play of the contest.
Padraic Williams allowed all seven runs for Youngstown State in
his second career start. Cody Dearth retired the only hitter he
faced in the fourth and allowed the triple to start the fifth.
Youngstown State is scheduled to play at Canisius on Wednesday
at 3 p.m.
