Box Score Valparaiso, Ind. -- Valparaiso scored in every
inning but the third and got some early help from wind consistently
blowing near 30 miles per hour to defeat the Youngstown State
baseball team 11-1 on Friday at Emory G. Bauer Field.
Will Hagel went 3-for-5 with three RBIs, and Kyle Gaedele scored
three times for Valpo. Craig Goubeaux led the Penguins with two
hits and an RBI in three at bats.
The Crusaders scored three times in the first, and, after YSU
scored a run in the second, went on to score the final eight runs
of the game.
In the first, Gaedele drew a leadoff walk, and the next two
runners reached on a bunt single and a fielder's choice on a bunt.
Hagel then singled in two of those runners when his fly ball to
center had Neil Schroth turning around. A sacrifice bunt moved
runners to second and third, and starter Bill Turosky struck out
Bobby Martin for the second out. Corey Thibault's infield pop-up
played tricks and landed to allow Chris Manning to score the third
run, and Hagel was thrown out at the plate to end the inning.
Jeremy Banks doubled to lead off the second, and he scored on
Goubeaux's two-out single to right.
Valpo tacked on two more wind-aided runs in the bottom of the
second. Turosky walked two runners in the inning, and both came in
to score when David Leon couldn't come up with Manning's pop-up in
the infield.
With the score 5-1, Leon led off the third with a double and
immediately went to third on a wild pitch. Valpo starter Justin
Frane was able to escape without allowing him to score. Padraic
Williams grounded out to third, and, after Joe Iacobucci was
beaned, Banks grounded into a 4-6-3 double play to end the
inning.
Frane went on to retire the next 10 batters in order, and the
Penguins didn't have another base-runner until Schroth's single
with one out in the seventh. By that time, the Crusaders led 9-1.
Valpo added a single tally in both the seventh and eighth innings
for the final score.
Turosky, making his first career start in a conference game,
allowed six earned runs on six hits and four walks in five innings
of work. Frane allowed one run on five hits and one walk in eight
innings to improve to 2-1.
The Penguins and Crusaders are scheduled to play a doubleheader
on Saturday starting at 1 p.m. Eastern. For weather updates, check
