Box Score 2 Cincinnati, Ohio -- Youngstown State pitchers
Kevin McCulloh and Padraic Williams held Cincinnati to one run on
five hits, and the Penguins picked up their first victory of the
season with a 2-1 win over the Bearcats on Sunday at Marge Schott
Stadium. The Penguins dropped game two of the doubleheader
11-0.
McCulloh allowed one run on five hits and four walks while
striking out eight in six innings of work. Williams allowed just
one base runner in the final three innings to earn his first
collegiate save.
McCulloh struck out the side in the first, and Joe Iacobucci
sparked the offense in the second with a leadoff single. Craig
Goubeaux moved him to second with a one-out single, and, after an
error prolonged the inning, Phil Lipari knocked in two runs with a
single up the middle.
That was all McCulloh and Williams needed as the Bearcats
stranded a runner in scoring position in six different innings.
Their run came in the fifth on Chris Peters' two-out single.
"I can't say enough about the outing McCulloh gave us," YSU head
coach Rich Pasquale said. "He competes every day he takes the
mound, and we need all of our pitchers to compete each inning of
every game. We played good defense behind him, and Phil came up
with a clutch base hit to give us the lead."
Armani Johnson doubled and singled, and Drew Dosch added a
single for the Penguins. Matt Williams had two of Cincinnati's five
singles. The Bearcats stole six bases.
Andrew Strenge was the hard-luck loser for UC, allowing no
earned runs on five hits in seven innings.
In game two, Cincinnati jumped on starter Robert Switka for
seven runs in the first two innings en route to its 11-0 victory.
The Bearcats plated two runs in the first, and seven hits in the
second inning led to five tallies. Jake Proctor had a two-run
double in the inning, and Williams delivered a two-out, two-run
single to knock Switka from the game.
Cincinnati added three runs in the third and another in the
fourth.
Nick Johnson earned the win for Cincinnati, holding the Penguins
to one hit in five innings.
Youngstown State will be back in action on Friday with the start
of a three-game series at Tennessee Tech. First pitch in game one
is set for 4 p.m.
