Akron, Ohio – Senior DuShawn Brooks scored a game-high 20 points, but Youngstown State committed a season-high 21 turnovers and dropped an 88-62 decision to Akron on Monday at the James A. Rhodes Arena.

The Guins fall to 6-5 overall while the Zips improve to 6-5.

Kendrick Perry and Damian Eargle each added eight points for the Guins. Perry dished out five assists and Eargle recorded nine rebounds and six blocks.

The Guins built an early 12-7 lead thanks in part to eight points by Brooks, but the Zips answered with a 10-0 run to take a 17-12 lead with 13:24 left in the first half.

A dunk by Damian Eargle and a 3-pointer by Nate Perry knotted the game at 17-17 at the 12:13 mark, and a layup by Brooks tied the game at 19-19 with 10:56 to go.

The Zips scored six straight before a Brooks 3-pointer brought the Guins within three, 25-22, with 7:39 to go.

Akron, though, scored the next 11 points to expand their lead to 14 points, 36-22, at the 4:13 mark.

The Guins chipped the lead back down to seven, 37-30, after 3-pointers by Nate Perry and Brooks and two free throws by Eargle at the 2:32 mark.

Akron was able to rebuild its advantage back to 11 points at the half, 41-30, and scored the first seven points of the second half to take a 48-30 lead with 17:05 left in the game.

The closest the Guins would get was 13, 52-39, at the 14:05 mark when Blake Allen hit a 3-pointer.

The Guins return home to face Robert Morris, Thursday, Dec. 22, at 7:05 p.m. at the Beeghly Center.
