
Hundelt Leads Volleyball, Burrows to First Victory

Youngstown -- Freshman Marissa Hundelt posted a career-best 17 kills, and head coach Krista Burrows earned her first Division I victory as the Youngstown State volleyball team defeated Howard 3-1 (25-19, 25-15, 13-25, 28-26) on Friday at the YSU Invitational.
Hundlet added 14 digs to collect her first career double-double. Tasha Reid added a season-best 12 kills as Youngstown State posted a season-high .218 attack percentage. Hundelt's 17 kills came on a .483 hitting clip.
Haley Kapferer had eight blocks, and the Penguins had 13.5 as a squad. Dani Soubliere had 27 assists.
Tosin Elebute had a match-high 20 kills and 10 digs to lead Howard. The Bison had two more kills than the Penguins, but they had five more errors and six fewer aces.
Hundelt and the Penguins got off to a strong start in the first set in their 25-19 victory. Hundelt had seven of YSU's 15 kills, and YSU hit .440 as a team. There were eight ties and four lead changes, but YSU took the lead for good at 16-15. An Elebute kill made the score 19-18, but the Guins closed out the set by scoring six of the final seven points, three in which Hundelt contributed.
YSU never trailed in the second set and did not lead by fewer than three after the score was 10-7. Hundelt had three kills in the set, and the Penguins posted three aces.
Howard came out of the break and defeated YSU 25-13 in the third set behind 17 kills. The Bison then led 10-5 and 12-8 in the fourth set before Youngstown State rallied to go up 15-14 on a Reid kill. Neither team led by more than one until Howard went ahead 23-21. The Bison had two set points, but Kapferer's block and Soubliere's kill tied the score at 24-24. Hundelt had kills on three of the final four points to close out the match at 28-26.
The Penguins play two matches on Saturday at the YSU Invitational. Youngstown State will play Niagara at 11 a.m. and Central Michigan at 7 p.m. Central Michigan defeated Niagara 3-1 in the first match on Friday.
