Penguins Drop Close Three-Set Affair to Green Bay

Youngstown -- Green Bay hit .317 as a team and blocked eight attacks from the Youngstown State volleyball team in a three-set sweep of the Penguins on Friday at Beeghly Center.
The match was closely contested with 20 ties and 10 lead changes, but Green Bay held on in each set to win 25-21, 25-19, 25-21. Green Bay evened its Horizon League record to 1-1 while YSU dropped to 0-2.
Freshman Marissa Hundelt led the Penguins with nine kills, and Haley Kapferer added eight. Libero Brianna Kern had a match-high 10 digs.
Abbey Gitter had 11 kills to lead Green Bay.
Youngstown State took a 20-17 lead in the opening set on Kara Lindstedt's attack error. Green Bay, though, came out of a timeout to score the next six points to go up 23-20 on a Kelly Mischler kill. Youngstown State got a sideout on a service error, but Mischler blocked Jenna Cavanaugh and Kelsi Bitter's following attempt was out.
Green Bay jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the second set, and they quickly rebounded after allowing YSU to go up 14-13. The Phoenix went up 21-16 on another Mischler kills, and Lindstedt had back-to-back kills to clinch the set.
The third set had 10 ties and four lead changes, both of which were highs for the match. The Penguins led 17-16 in the third on a kill from setter Dani Soubliere, but Green Bay reclaimed the lead with back-to-back points out of a timeout and never trailed again. YSU tied the score at 18, 19 and 20 before Green Bay scored five of the final six points of the match.
Youngstown State will host defending Horizon League champion Milwaukee on Saturday at 2 p.m.
