Penguins Volleyball Falls at NIU in Straight Sets

DeKalb, Ill. -- Northern Illinois freshman Lauren Wicinski had a match-high 15 kills, and the Huskies hit .312 as a team to defeat Youngstown State in straight sets on Saturday at the NIU Student Recreation Center.
NIU improved to 12-1 with the victory while YSU dropped to 2-11.
Junior Tasha Reid led YSU with nine kills, and Marissa Hundelt had 11 digs. The match was delayed by about two hours because of a power outage at NIU's arena, which forced the teams to play at the recreation center.
The Penguins were playing without starting libero Brittany McNeal, who was out with a foot injury.
The first and third set were both competitive with six ties and three lead changes in the opener and six ties and two lead changes in the third. NIU led the entire second set and won 25-15. The Huskies won the opener 25-21 and the clincher 25-18.
NIU did not lead by more than five the entire first set, and the Penguins trailed just 19-17 after Hundelt and Jenna Cavanaugh blocked a Wicinski attack. The Huskies scored the next three points to go up 22-17, and the Penguins got no closer than 24-21.
The Huskies jumped out to leads of 7-1 and 12-4 in the second set, but they fell behind 7-4 in the third set after a ball-handling error. The Huskies regained the lead 11-10 on a Wicisnki kill, but they didn't pull ahead by more than three until 18-14. NIU scored three of the next four points to go up 21-15 and force a YSU timeout, and the Penguins got no closer than five the rest of the way.
The Penguins will play their final non-conference match of the season on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Eastern Michigan.
