Volleyball Drops Horizon League Opener at UIC in Straight Sets

Chicago -- The Youngstown State volleyball team lost its Horizon League opener at UIC Friday night, falling 25-19, 25-19, 25-14 to the Flames.
Senior middle blocker Haley Kapferer had a team-high six kills and three blocks to lead the Penguins. Freshmen Marissa Hundelt and Jenna Cavanaugh both added five kills, and Brittany McNeal posted seven digs.
UIC's Casie Sullivan led all players with 12 kills and 11 digs.
The Penguins employed a balanced approach as six different players had at least nine attacks. Of those, however, only Kapferer and Hundelt hit above .182. The Flames had 42 kills while YSU had 26.
There were four ties and three lead changes in the opening set, and Youngstown State led 8-5 after back-to-back Kapferer kills. UIC, though, scored seven straight points to up 12-8 and never led by fewer than three the rest of the set. The Penguins had seven of their 14 hitting errors in the first set.
The Flames went on a 5-1 run in the second set to go up 14-8, and they led 21-15 before the Penguins climbed to within 23-19. The final two points came on a McNeal service error and a Janise Dismuke kill.
The Flames then closed out the match by turning a 15-10 advantage into a 25-14 triumph in the third set.
The Penguins will play at Northern Illinois on Saturday at 2 p.m. Eastern.
