Volleyball Loses Closely-Contested Match at Saint Francis (Pa.)

Loretto, Pa. -- The Youngstown State volleyball team played its closest match of the season so far, but the Penguins came up short in a tightly-contested battle at Saint Francis (Pa.) on Tuesday evening.
The Penguins had 12.5 blocks to the Red Flash's one, and YSU also had two more aces. Saint Francis (Pa.), however, posted 21 more kills en route to winning 26-24, 22-25, 25-22, 25-23. The Penguins dropped to 0-4 while the Red Flash improved to 1-2.
Lauren Wingard had a match-high 17 kills, and Lindsay Malloy had 15 kills and 11 digs to lead the Red Flash. Freshman Marissa Hundelt led YSU with eight kills, and Brittany McNeal registered a match-best 21 digs.
The Penguins rallied from an 18-11 deficit in the first set to tie the score at 24-24. The Red Flash led 24-20, but YSU knotted the set on four straight kills from Tasha Reid, Hundelt, Haley Kapferer and Casey D'Ambrose. SFU scored the next two points on kills by Wingard and Danielle Reese.
YSU also trailed 16-10 in the second set but completed the rally to win 25-22. A block by Reid and Jenna Cavanaugh tied the score at 20-20 - the first tie since 6-6 – and D'Ambrose's ace gave the Penguins the set. Saint Francis (Pa.) had five of its 18 service errors in the second set.
Saint Francis (Pa.) also committed five service errors in the third set, but the Red Flash were able to force the Penguins into seven attack errors as they went on to the 25-22 win. The set had 12 ties and seven lead changes, and the Penguins led 6-2 early. After Saint Francis (Pa.) cut the margin to 7-5, neither team led by more than two until Malloy's kill put the Red Flash ahead 23-20. Back-to-back kills from Cavanaugh and Reid forced the Red Flash to call a timeout, but Wingard connected on back-to-back kills to give the Red Flash the third set.
The fourth set had seven ties and five lead changes, and the largest lead was when Saint Francis (Pa.) held a 15-10 advantage. YSU scored five straight points to go ahead 22-20, but the Red Flash closed out the match by scoring five of the final six points. Malloy had three kills during that span.
The Penguins will host the YSU Invitational this weekend at Beeghly Center. YSU will play Howard on Friday at 6:30 p.m. in the tournament's second match. The Guins open play on Saturday against Niagara at 11 a.m., and they play Central Michigan in the tournament's finale at 7 p.m.
