Volleyball Drops Season Opener to Buffalo in Straight Sets

Morgantown, W.Va. -- Despite a match-high nine kills from junior right-side hitter Tasha Reid, the Youngstown State volleyball team lost its season opener in straight sets to Buffalo on Saturday at the WVU Classic.
The Penguins, playing under head coach Krista Burrows for the first time, lost 26-24, 25-20, 25-16. They play Akron later today at 4:30 p.m.
Freshman outside hitter Marissa Hundelt had a match-high 11 digs, and freshman middle blocker Jenna Cavanaugh posted a match-best two blocks.
The Bulls had five players with at least six kills, and Reid was the Penguins' only hitter with more than five terminations.
Kristin Bignell had nine kills to lead Buffalo.
YSU led the first set 24-20 after a Cavanaugh kill, but the Bulls scored six straight points to win the set. The Bulls had three kills and got some help by two ball handling errors and an attack error. YSU led by as many as seven in the set when Haley Kapferer connected on a kill on Reid's serve.
The Penguins never led in the second set, but they scored the first four points on Reid's serve in the third set. YSU was up 6-2, but Buffalo went on a 15-3 run to surge ahead to a 17-9 advantage on back-to-back Bignell kills.
