Volleyball Can't Overcome Early Deficits in Three-Set Loss to Akron

Morgantown, W.Va. -- Junior Tasha Reid had another solid match, and freshman Jenna Cavanaugh posted a career-best six kills as the Youngstown State volleyball team was swept by Akron on Saturday at the WVU Classic.
The Penguins found themselves in deep holes in the first and third sets, and they couldn't complete a comeback in the second set after trailing by as many as eight. Akron won by scores of 25-18, 28-26 and 25-19.
Reid finished with a team-high eight kills and posted a .286 attack percentage. The right-side hitter had nine kills in YSU's earlier match on Saturday against Buffalo. Cavanaugh and Reid both had six block assists and the Penguins notched eight total blocks. Brittany McNeal added a team-best 18 digs.
Akron scored the first eight points of the first set behind Courtney Jarvis' serve, and YSU was only able to get within five at 10-5. The Zips led by as many as 11 before the Penguins rallied to cut the margin back to five when Jarvis' attack error made the score 22-17. Akron, though, closed out the set by scoring three of the final four points.
Neither team led by more than two early in the second set until Akron took a 9-6 lead. Akron extended its lead to eight on Alex Wiederholt's kill, making the score 17-9. YSU, though, mounted a comeback and climbed to within 19-17 on Marissa Hundelt's kill. A Jarvis attack error brought the Penguins to within one at 20-19, and YSU tied the score three times before Jarvis' kill gave Akron the set.
The Zips jumped out to leads of 5-0 and 7-1 in the third set en route to its win. They led 16-7 before the Penguins scored five of the next seven points to climb within five.
Youngstown State will play host West Virginia on Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
