Box Score 2 Avon, Ohio -- Cleveland State used three big
innings - one in game one and two in game two - to sweep a
doubleheader from Youngstown State, 16-11 and 12-6, on Saturday at
All Pro Freight Stadium.
Those three big innings accounted for 21 of Cleveland State's 28
runs over the two games.
In game one, the Vikings scored 11 runs in the third inning and
withstood a rally by YSU to hold on for its 16-11 win. After YSU
scored three runs in the top of the first inning in game two,
Cleveland State scored the next 11 runs to go up 11-3 after five
innings.
In game one, the Vikings' 11 run inning put them ahead 12-4, but
YSU was able to cut the deficit to just one in the next two
innings. Cleveland State, though, held the Guins scoreless over the
final four innings and scored the game's final four runs to win
16-11.
Joe Iacobucci doubled twice and drove in four runs for
Youngstown State. Kyle Shaffer and Bob Suitca both drove in four
runs for Cleveland State, which outhit YSU just 17-16.
The Penguins took a 3-0 lead in the top off the second with four
hits off CSU starter Kris Hall. Padraic Williams singled in
Jonathan Crist, who doubled, for the first run of the contest.
Three batters later, Healey hit a two-run double to right that
plated Derek Carr and Williams.
The Vikings got a run across in the bottom of the second when
Jason Haditsch brought in Ryan Franks on a groundout. YSU took a
4-1 lead in the top of the third when Jeremy Banks scored on
Williams' ground out.
Cleveland State scored 11 runs on nine hits and sent 15 men to
the plate in the third inning as took a 12-4 lead. Kyle Shaffer hit
a two-run homer to account for Cleveland State's first runs of the
inning, and Bob Suitca hit a three-run blast to conclude the
Vikings' scoring.
Iacobucci's three-run double helped YSU start to chip away at
the lead in the fourth, and he scored on Eric Marzec's ground out
to cut the margin to 12-8. YSU put up three more runs in the fifth,
the final two of which came on back-to-back RBI doubles from
Iacobucci and Tom Clayton.
That was all the Penguins could muster off Jimmy Cowhy, though.
They stranded two runners in the seventh but didn't have a runner
in scoring position in any other inning.
Cleveland State added to its lead with two runs apiece in the
sixth and eighth innings.
Jacke Healey broke the school record for runs in a season when
he scored in the fourth. That was his 55th run of the season, which
broke Mark Thomas' record of 54 set in 1999.
In game two, the Penguins scored three times despite recording
just one hit in the first inning. Healey drew a one-out walk, and
Tom Clayton reached on a fielder's choice. Both runners advanced on
a passed ball, and Iacobucci drove in the pair with a single up the
middle. Iacobucci stole second, advanced on an error and scored on
Marzec's sacrifice fly.
Cleveland State, though, struck for six runs on six hits and two
walks in the bottom of the first to go up 6-3. Three of those runs
scored after there were already two outs. Once Haditsch's RBI
single completed the first trip through the order, Bill Turosky
came in to relieve Blake Aquadro. Turosky allowed an RBI single to
the first batter he faced, but he got out of the inning with a
strikeout.
Turosky held the Vikings scoreless until the fourth, but they
scored four times in the fifth to blow the game open with their
11-3 advantage.
Both teams scored a run in the sixth, and YSU's final two runs
came in the top of the ninth.
Youngstown State will play at Toledo on Tuesday at 2 p.m.
