Box Score Kent, Ohio -- Kent State rallied with three runs in the ninth
inning to spoil two more home runs from Youngstown State's Jacke Healey in a 6-5 win on Wednesday afternoon at Schoonover
Stadium.
Seven different YSU pitchers held the Golden Flashes to three
runs in the first seven innings, and Kevin McCulloh retired the
first four batters he faced before Kent State mounted its rally
with one out in the ninth.
Travis Shaw drew a full-count walk, and David Lyon bounced a
ball high off the turn over Jeremy Banks at first base to put two
runners on. Jordan Lucas was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and
Evan Campbell doubled to right to tie the score. McCulloh
intentionally walked Cory Hindle to put the force on at every base,
and he got Ben Klafczynski to hit a grounder to Banks that resulted
in an out. McCulloh battled back to full count after falling behind
3-0 Jared Humphreys, but the Kent State leadoff hitter hit a single
between first and second for the game-winner.
Kent State had been knocking on the door all game with 11 hits,
but the Penguins' array of hurlers continually worked out of jams
and forced the Golden Flashes to strand 14 runners. YSU was held to
five hits in the contest, by the first three all went for extra
bases.
Zac McFarland got YSU's first hit in the second when he hit a
bloop triple that landed just inside the right-field line and
rolled into foul territory. Greg Dissinger brought him in with a
sacrifice fly to center for the game's first run.
The Penguins then went ahead 3-0 in the third with Healey's
two-run home run to left center. Tom Clayton started the offense
when he was beaned on a 1-2 pitch, and Healey took Mace's 1-0 pitch
deep for his eighth round-tripper of the campaign.
The Golden Flashes left five runners on in the first three
innings, and they had the bases loaded with one out in the fourth.
Reliever Trent Wood escaped when Humphreys lined into a double play
to third baseman Zac McFarland.
YSU added two runs to its lead in the fifth with two unearned
runs. Jonathan Crist reached on a two-base error when Humphreys
lost the ball in the sun in center field. Crist went to third on a
Padraic Williams sacrifice bunt, and Tom Clayton followed with a
sacrifice fly to plate YSU's fourth run. Healey went deep again -
this time just inside the left field foul pole - to make the score
5-0.
Kent State got a run across in the bottom of the fifth when
Jimmy Rider led off with a double and scored a strike three pitch
in the dirt that got away from Crist. The Golden Flashes then
scored single runs in the sixth and seventh to climb within
5-3.
Campbell finished with a game-high three hits, and he drove in
three for Kent State, which improved to 9-12. Healey was the only
Penguin with two hits, and he drove in three runs. Healey now has
nine home runs in the first 16 games of the season for YSU. The
school record for home runs in a season is 11.

Guins scoreless in the ninth. Blake Aquadro, Anthony Munoz, Codey
Dearth and Trent Wood threw scoreless frames for YSU. Bill Turosky
