Dayton, Ohio -- The Youngstown State softball team fell to 5-12 overall after dropping a pair of games to Dayton, 10-4, and 5-3, on Saturday afternoon.
In the opener, the Penguins banged out 10 hits, a 3-for-3 performance from sophomore Kristen Philen and a two-run home run from freshman Vicky Rumph.
The Penguins got on the board in the top of the first after sophomore Haley Thomas doubled then scored on Kim Klonowski's ground out.
Dayton answered with three runs in the bottom of the first and another in the bottom of the second to take a 4-1 lead after two innings.
In the top of the fourth, Rumph's blast plated Jordan Ingalls, who singled, brought the Penguins within one, 4-3. Senior Autumn Grove and Philen each singled and Amanda Palmore reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases with no outs.
Dayton's relief pitcher Amanda Daly induced a pop out, a ground out and a line drive to kill the Penguins' threat.
The Flyers added two more in the fourth and four in the sixth to put the game out of reach.
In game two, Thomas doubled and homered while Klonowski and Ingalls each tallied two hits but the Penguins left seven runners on base in the 5-3 loss.
Just like the opener, the Penguins struck in the top of the first when Thomas doubled and scored on a ground out by Klonowski.
After the Flyers took a 2-1 lead in the bottom half of the first, the Penguins knotted the contest at 2-2 in the top of the third on Ingalls' base-loaded single plated Thomas, who walked.
Dayton regained the lead with a run in the bottom half of the frame and added insurance runs in the fourth and sixth innings to take a 5-2 lead.
Thomas' second home run of the season in the top of the seventh ended the scoring.
The Penguins visit Akron, Tuesday, March 23, at 3 p.m.
