Pitt Topples Penguins Softball Twice

Pittsburgh, Pa. -- Senior Cheryl Cale struck out six and allowed just two earned runs in the opener and the Penguins banged out 10 hits in game two but the Youngstown State softball team dropped a pair of games to Pittsburgh, 5-1, and 6-3, on Wednesday afternoon at Trees Field.
Cale held the Panthers scoreless through five innings and held a 1-0 lead thanks to a run-scoring double by sophomore Kristen Philen in the top of the fifth.
However, in the bottom of the sixth, Cale gave up five runs, three of them unearned, on three hits, an error, a hit batter and a walk.
In the night cap, the Penguins fell behind 6-0 after three innings and attempted a comeback with a run in the fourth and two more in the fifth inning but could not overcome the early deficit.
Freshman Vicky Rumph belted a solo home run - her team-high fourth - in the top of the fourth inning. In the top of the fifth, junior Kristina Rendle led off the frame with a single to left field and scored on junior Kim Klonowski's two-run home run to center field to cut the deficit in half, 6-3.
Klonowski, Rendle and Philen each tallied two hits for the Penguins in game two while Klonowski drove in two runs.
The Penguins visit Akron, Thursday, March 25, in a doubleheader at 3 p,m.
