Last Year vs. Indiana State
The defense kept Indiana State in check before the offense put the game out of reach with two fourth-quarter touchdowns as the Penguins won 28-0 at Memorial Stadium in 2009.
YSU took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter on a 36-yard scoring toss from Brandon Summers to Dominique Barnes. However, until the 10-minute mark of the fourth quarter, that represented the only score by either team.
In the fourth quarter, tailback Kevin Smith found paydirt from 21 yards out with 10:03 remaining. Later, Summers connected with Aaron Pitts on a one-yard pass to boost the advantage to 21-0 with 4:39 remaining.
Less than a minute later, linebacker Na'eem Outler returned an interception 37 yards for a touchdown, putting the exclamation point on the win. The defense forced four turnovers, including three picks.
Last Time at YSU
YSU overcame a 21-7 second-quarter deficit to beat Indiana State 35-21 on Senior Day at Stambaugh Stadium in 2008.
The Penguins took an early lead on a two-yard run by Ben Lane in the first quarter. Indiana State responded with a one-yard run by Ryan Roberts to tie the game.
ISU went ahead 14-7 on another Roberts score and built a 21-7 lead when Donye McCleskey returned a fumble 47 yards for a touchdown with 10:04 left in the second.
The Penguins rallied to tie the game before halftime, scoring two touchdowns in the final five minutes. Brandon Summers connected with Donald Jones on a 10-yard score, and Dana Brown scored from five yards out to tie the game at halftime.
In the third, Summers connected with Jones from 23 yards, and, in the fourth, Summers threw an 11-yard scoring toss to Dominique Barnes.
Barnes High on Career Receiving Lists
For his career, wide receiver Dominique Barnes has 158 receptions for 1,930 yards and 15 touchdowns.
He now ranks second in school history for career receptions behind only Jim Ferranti's mark of 186.
Barnes needs 70 yards in his final game to become the seventh player in school history with 2,000 for a career.
He picked up his 15th career receiving touchdown against UNI. Barnes scored on a 71-yard grab in the second quarter against the Panthers. He is tied for fifth in YSU history with Bob Ferranti.
In three career games against Illinois State he finished with 24 receptions for 335 yards and two touchdowns.
Hess Starts Career Strong
Redshirt freshman quarterback Kurt Hess is the first signal caller in school history to pass for at least 200 yards in five consecutive games.
Hess threw for 250 yards, completing 19-of-38 passes. and two scores at Illinois State.
On Oct. 23, he set three career highs at South Dakota State. He completed 26-of-46 passes for 263 yards. Hess's other 200-yard performances were a 213-yard effort at Western Illinois, a 252-yard performance vs. North Dakota State and a 218-yard outing vs. UNI.
He is completing 60.3 percent of his passes. He has completed 167-of-277 passes for 1,926 yards and 12 touchdowns with only four interceptions.
Now We're Cooking
Sophomore tailback Jamaine Cook has rushed for 1,199 yards on 220 carries and scored 10 touchdowns to lead the YSU, ground game. Cook is the 14th YSU player to rush for more than 1,000 yards in a season. He has 56 percent of the Guins rushing yards this year.
He has rushed for more than 100 yards in six of the last eight games. Cook is coming off a career-best 43-carry, 213-yard effort at Illinois State. He scored two rushing touchdowns against the Redbirds and caught a third.
His 43 carries are tied with Monquantae Gibson (2006) for the second most in a game in school history. His 213 yards is the 13th-best single-game rushing yardage performance.
Against UNI, he finished with 127 yards on 26 carries. The Panthers were allowing just 80 yards rushing per game this season.
He had 30 carries for 161 yards in the contest at Western Illinois.
He rushed for 167 at Missouri State, 111 against Southern Illinois and 179 on just 14 attempts versus Central Connecticut State.
He is third in the MVFC and 11th nationally in average rushing yards (119.90) per game.
Ground Attack is Back
The Penguins are 15th nationally in rushing offense averaging 215.6 yards per game. Even though they rank highly on the FCS level, they are still fourth in the MVFC.
The last time YSU averaged more than 200 yards per game was in 2006 (223.7 a contest in 14 games). YSU has averaged more than 200 yards a contest just twice since 1998.
The Guins have rushed for 200-or-more yards in six games this year, including a 293-yard effort at Illinois State. YSU has had a tailback (Jamaine Cook six times and Adaris Bellamy once) rush for more than 100 yards in seven of the past eight games.
The Penguins have 27 rushing scores this year. The past two seasons combined, they had 25.
Offense Piles Up Yards
For the first time in school history, the Guins have had three 500-yard performances in the same season. YSU had a season-best 523 yards at Illinois State last Saturday.
YSU had 512 yards against Central Connecticut State on Sept. 18 and had 506 yards at Western Illinois on Oct. 16. The Guins also had 499 versus North Dakota State.
Entering the final game of the year, YSU is averaging a school-record 408.2 yards per game. The current full-season mark is 407.1 set in 2001. Also, the 32 points per game ranks third behind 33.5 in 2001 and 1978.
Red Zone Success
Coach Eric Wolford has stressed the importance of scoring in the red zone. Now YSU ranks first in the FCS in red-zone conversion percentage at 95 percent.
The Guins are 37-of-39 when reaching the Red Zone. YSU was 6-of-6 in scoring opportunities at Illinois State.
YSU has scored 29 touchdowns, including 21 via the rush, and kicked eight field goals when visiting the Red Zone.
The two times YSU did not score in the red zone were drives that ended inside the one-yard line. At WIU, the Guins were stopped short on a fourth-and-goal try from the one, while against North Dakota State, YSU fumbled through the end zone after losing the ball at the one.
Guins Still High in FCS Rankings
The Penguins rank in the top 20 in numerous national FCS rankings.
YSU is first in red-zone offense efficiency (95 percent), third in the nation in punt return average (17.92 per return), seventh in fewest passes intercepted (four), eighth in third-down conversion percentage (47.89 percent), ninth in fewest tackles for losses allowed (4.30), ninth in first downs (22.50), 15th in rushing offense (215.6), 16th in scoring offense (32.00), 18th in total offense (408.20) and 20th in sacks allowed (1.10).
Senior Day Success
The Penguins have won six straight home finales to send their seniors off on a positive note. Since 2005, the Guins have defeated Western Kentucky, Indiana State (twice), Illinois State, Southern Illinois and Western Illinois. The 2006 group added two home playoff wins after beating the Salukis. Since 2001, YSU is 8-1 in home finales.
Nearing Milestones
QB Kurt Hess is 74 yards passing from being the 11th quarterback to throw for more than 2,000 yards in a season. WR Dominique Barnes is three receptions shy of back-to-back 60-catch campaigns. Barnes would be the first player in school history. He is also just 70 yards shy of 2,000 for his career. TB Jamaine Cook is just 250 all-purpose yards shy of 2,000 for the season.
Barnes Sets Reception Mark
Senior wide receiver Dominique Barnes established a new school record for receptions in consecutive games at 33. The previous mark of 30 was established by Kyle Smith from 2002 through 2005.
At South Dakota State on Oct. 23, Barnes had 10 catches for 110 yards and a touchdown. It was the third time this season he had double figures in receptions in a single game.
He joins former teammate Donald Jones as the only two players in YSU history with three double-figure reception games.
Barnes and Jones (2009) are also the only two Penguin receivers to have multiple double-digit reception games in a season.
On Oct. 9, he caught 10 passes for a career-high 151 yards against North Dakota State. He started the year by tying the school record with 11 receptions at Penn State.
Blose Near Perfect on Field
Senior placekickier Stephen Blose, who has maintained a 4.00 GPA throughout his college career, had never missed an extra-point kick in as the team's placekicker before the contest at South Dakota State on Oct. 23.
Blose had his school record of 55 straight kicks made broken when he had his lone attempt of the game blocked at SDSU.
On the year he is 36-of-38 on PAT tries while going 63-of-65 for his career.
However, Blose is on another streak. He has made 10 straight field goals, becoming the just the third kicker in school history to do so. The school record is 14 set by Brian Palmer in 2007-08.
Earlier this season, Blose tied a school record by making nine extra points against Central Connecticut State.
In 2009, he became the first kicker in six years to make all of his point-after conversions, going 27-of-27. It was the first time since Nick Terracina was perfect in 2004 that a YSU placekicker made all his attempts for a campaign.
Punt Returns are Special
The Penguins have 13 punt returns on the season, and three have gone for at least 45 yards. Dominique Barnes returned a punt 86 yards for a score against Butler and had a 51-yard return at Missouri State. Jamarious Boatwright returned a punt 47 yards in the win over Central Connecticut State. On 12 returns, the Guins have a total of 223 yards.
The school record for punt return average is 15.7, which was set back in 2001. Right now YSU is on pace to eclipse that averaging 17.9 per return.
After a good start, the Guins have just 14 yards on their last six returns.
Sasson Keeps Stepping Up
Junior linebacker John Sasson leads the team with 82 tackles. He is second on the squad with 38 solo stops. Sasson has had at least six tackles in every game, highlighted by two 10-stop performances. Sasson had 10-tackle performances at South Dakota State (Oct. 23) and against Butler (Sept. 11).
Ross Leads in INTs, Starts
Senior Brandian Ross is in his second year as a starting cornerback. He leads the team with two interceptions (vs. SIU and NDSU) this season and has six during his career.
In his previous three seasons, Ross had four interceptions: Pittsburgh and North Dakota State in 2009; NDSU in 2008 and Indiana State in 2007.
He has the most career starts on the team with 32. He also has the most career tackles of anyone on the team with 212, including 52 this season.
With the loss of Andre Elliott, he is the lone senior starter in the secondary and is just one of three on the defense, joining linemen Luke Matelan and Torrance Nicholson.
Liste Keeps Kicking
Redshirt freshman punter Nick Liste has started his YSU career off on the right foot.
Liste has averaged 39 yards or more in eight of his first 10 games in a Penguin uniform and, for the season, is at a 41.3 per kick clip.
At Missouri State, he kicked a career-long 69-yarder. The 69-yard punt was the seventh-longest in school history and longest for a Guin since Joe Bishop's 70-yarder in 2004.
Of his 38 kicks this season, 23 have gone at least 40 yards while 14 have been downed inside the 20. He has six 50-yard plus boots this year.
Fourth Quarter Nightmares
When YSU looks back on the season, some fourth-quarter plays will be leaving the Guins with plenty of "What ifs?"
The Penguins have held fourth-quarter leads in seven games this season. Only Penn State, Missouri State and South Dakota State led YSU throughout the final stanza.
YSU won three times beating Butler, Central Connecticut State and Southern Illinois, but the other four have been tough ones to swallow. All have come in the final 2:15 of the game with three occurring in the last minute. The four losses have been by a total of 12 points.
YSU led North Dakota State 29-28 before losing 34-29; the Guins were in front of Western Illinois 38-34 before falling 40-38; they led UNI 30-27 before losing 34-30 and YSU rallied from down 18 points to lead Illinois State 39-35, but the Redbirds scored with 0.7 seconds left for the 41-39 victory.
Finish What You Started
In five games of the six-game losing streak, the Penguins have jumped out of the gate well. YSU built a 17-0 lead at Missouri State, led 10-0 versus North Dakota State after the first quarter, led 24-14 at halftime at Western Illinois, held a 9-7 lead at South Dakota State with five minutes left in the first half and led UNI 14-3 in the second quarter. YSU and Illinois State were tied 7-7 in the second period.
In YSU's three wins, it has been outscored 21-14 in the first quarter but outscored the opposition 66-17 in the second and third quarters. In the seven losses, the Guins have outscored opponents 57-30 in the first period but been outscored 155-68 in the second and third quarters. In the fourth quarters of all games, the Guins have been outscored 100-98.
YSU has had the lead in all 10 games so far this season and been in front in the second half in seven of those contests.
Barnes Top Five in KORs
Dominique Barnes has returned 50 kickoffs for 1,044 yards and one touchdown, which came against Missouri State his freshman season when he returned an on-side kick 37 yards for a score.
He ranks fourth in kickoff return yardage (1,044) and is tied for fifth in returns (50).
Nicholson Having Big Games
Senior DT Torrance Nicholson had one of the top performances of his career against Western Illinois. Nicholson had a career-best 3.5 tackles for losses, including a sack against the Leathernecks.
His previous career-best TFL was three against UNI in 2007, and it was the most tackles for loss in a game by a Penguin since Jeff Koval in 2006 vs. Illinois State (playoffs).
Against UNI, he had four solo stops, including a sack for a seven-yard loss. Nicholson had seven stops at South Dakota State as well. He has 22 tackles the past four games.
Ring My Bellamy
Freshman tailback Adaris Bellamy scored a career-high three touchdowns in the contest at Western Illinois. He is the first freshman tailback since Adrian Brown in 1996 to rush for three scores in a single game. Brown actually did it twice that year and tied a school record with four scores against Clarion.
At WIU, Bellamy had 72 yards on 17 carries, after rushing for a career-high 156 yards on a career-best 21 attempts against North Dakota State. That total was the fifth-best rushing performance by a freshman in school history.
He averaged 7.4 yards a rush while his longest run of the contest was just 23 yards. He had five rushes of 10 yards-or-more and three of 20-or-longer in the game.
Elite Company
Dominique Barnes is just one of two players in school history to return both a punt and a kickoff for a touchdown in a career. Barnes took his second career punt return 86 yards for a score against Butler. As a freshman in 2007, he returned an onside kick attempt 37 yards for a score vs. Missouri State.
The other Penguin to score via both returns during a career was Robert Thompson (1981-84). Thompson returned a punt 81 yards for a score against Northern Iowa in 1982 and took a kickoff back 91 yards versus Western Kentucky in 1983.
Lighting up the Scoreboard
YSU has scored at least 25 points in eight games this season, but has allowed 24 or more in nine contests.
Big Play Barnes
This season, Dominique Barnes has two scoring plays of 80 yards or more. In the season opener, he scored on an 80-yard pass from Kurt Hess in the first quarter against Penn State. Against Butler, Barnes took his second career punt 86 yards for a score in the third quarter. For good measure, he had a 71-yard touchdown reception against UNI.
Barnes is just the sixth player in school history to score multiple touchdowns of 80 yards or more. He joins Archie Herring, John Goode, Dick Adipotti, Dave DelSignore and Robert Thompson as some of the longest repeat playmakers in school history.
Goode holds the school mark with three 80-yard plus scores (all receptions).
Players of the Week
YSU has had three players earn MVFC Player-of-the-Week honors this season. Dominique Barnes was the Special Teams Player of the Week against Butler, offensive guard Bobby Coates was the Offensive Lineman of the Week against Central Connecticut State and cornerback Brandian Ross was tabbed the Defensive Player of the Week against Southern Illinois.
Back in the Rankings
The Guins returned to both the FCS Coaches Poll and The Sports Network/Fathead.com Poll for the first time since September 2008 on Sept. 27. YSU entered the Coaches Poll at 20th and was tabbed 22nd in The Sports Network/Fathead.com rankings.
The Penguins were last ranked (23rd) prior to their Sept. 27, 2008, contest against Liberty. YSU lost to the Flames on a last-play field goal and had not been ranked since.
This was the second straight year the Guins started a campaign 3-1.
Wolford Won MVFC Debut
Coach Eric Wolford helped lead the Penguins to their first win over Southern Illinois since 2006 and, in the process, earned his first win over an MVFC school is his first try.
Wolford joins former YSU coaches Jim Tressel and Jon Heacock in winning their conference debuts. Tressel won his conference debut when the Guins beat Tennessee Tech in the 1986 Ohio Valley Conference opener while Heacock led the Guins to a 41-7 win over Western Illinois in his first league game.
Streak Snappers
Youngstown State snapped Southern Illinois' record 14-game MVFC winning streak on Sept. 25. The last time the Salukis dropped a league game was at North Dakota State on Oct. 4, 2008.
The Penguins' last win (31-24) over SIU came on Nov. 4, 2006. The Salukis had defeated YSU by a score of 60-8 the past two years.
Plenty of Newcomers
The Penguins have 32 newcomers on the current roster. The positions with the most new players are defensive backs with six while the offensive line and linebackers have five each. Entering the final game, 13 true freshmen have seen action this season.
Four Seniors are Captains
Four seniors (two offense and two defense) are serving as team captains.
The four players selected to serve as captains are wide receiver Dominique Barnes, offensive guard Eric Rodemoyer, cornerback Brandian Ross and defensive tackle Torrance Nicholson. Barnes and Ross have never redshirted while Nicholson is in his fifth year. Rodemoyer transferred to YSU from West Virginia.
Offense Has Had New Faces
The offensive unit has had eight first-time starters this year. QB Kurt Hess, TB Jamaine Cook, TB Adaris Bellamy, WR Ely Ducatel, WR Juilian Harrell, WR Kevin Watts, WR Andre Barboza, TE Carson Sharbaugh and OT D.J. Main have all started for the first time in their YSU careers.
Defense Features Experience
The starting defensive lineups have featured a blend of newcomers and veterans.
Newcomers to start this season at some point are Will Shaw (SS), Jamarious Boatwright (CB), Donald D'Alesio (FS), Grant Mayes (FS), Andrew Johnson (DT) along with redshirts D.J. Moss (DT) and Dom Rich (LB). Senior DT Brad Miller and sophomore DE Obinna Ekweremuba also had their initial YSU starts in 2010.
Brandian Ross (32 starts) and Andre Elliott (25) along with Randy Louis (11) and Nick Gooden (10) headline the secondary. Deonta Tate (17), John Sasson (17) and David Rach (11) lead the linebackers. The defensive front four features Torrance Nicholson (25), Luke Matelan (25) and Stephen Meadows (17).
O-Line Senior Dominated
The offensive line has a disparity between old and new faces. This year's group features five seniors - Eric Rodemoyer, Bobby Coates, Tyler Figueroa, Justin Rechichar and Chris Gammon - three sophomores - D.J. Main, Marc Stevens and Andrew Radakovich - and five freshmen - Zach Larson, Stephen Page, Andrew Sinko, J.P. May and Chris Elkins.
YSU had the same starting offensive line for the first seven games, but Main is lost for the season because of a broken foot. Elkins has started at right guard the past three weeks.
Here is a list of career starts for the current members of the unit: Rodemoyer (29), Coates (29), Radakovich (19), Rechichar (18), Main (7), Figueroa (6), Gammon (5) and Elkins (3).
FBS Transfers
This year's roster features the following eight FBS transfers: QB Najee Tyler (Purdue), CB Grant Mayes (Syracuse), WR Juilian Harrell (Miami, Ohio), PK Jake Smith (Syracuse), DT Andrew Johnson (Bowling Green), OG Eric Rodemoyer (West Virginia), C Marc Stevens (Bowling Green) and OT Andrew Radakovich (Penn State). Six have played in 2010.
Single Digits in Fumbles
The Guins have lost nine fumbles through 10 games this season. Last year, YSU lost three fumbles, making it six consecutive years in which it has lost single digits in fumbles.
In 2008, YSU lost nine fumbles in 12 games. YSU had nine fumbles lost in 2007, five in 2006, eight in 2005 and eight in 2004. Prior to the current six-year streak, the Guins had committed single digits in fumbles lost in consecutive years just twice in school history (1986-87 and 1958-59).
All in the Family
Senior punter Erik Johnson is joined on the squad by his brother, freshman linebacker Kevin Johnson. YSU's cousins are senior defensive lineman Rob Fernback and freshman linebacker Danny Fernback along with tailback Adaris Bellamy and cornerback Jamarious Boatwright.
Left tackle Andrew Radakovich's brother Brian played tight end for the Penguins in 2005 after lettering four years on the basketball team.
Leading the team in the siblings category are John Sasson and Jamaine Cook. Sasson has four sisters and three brothers while Cook has four sisters and two brothers.
Seniors Class Breakdown
The Penguins senior class has been together for a long time. Of the 21 who are with the program this season, only three did not redshirt. Offensive Guard Eric Rodemoyer is the only member of the class to transfer to YSU. So far this year, 17 have seen action. All will take part in the final YSU game on Saturday.
Forcing Four Turnovers
The Penguins have won 17 straight games when forcing at least four turnovers in a contest, including a win over Southern Illinois this season. The last loss was at UNI in 2001 when YSU had five giveaways to the Panthers' four. The Guins are 18-1 when forcing at least four turnovers since 2001.
WATTS Behind Stadium
Visitors to Stambaugh Stadium will see an impressive complex being constructed behind the east side of Stambaugh Stadium.
That structure is the Watts and Tressel Training Site (WATTS), a state-of-the-art indoor facility that's set to open this winter. The WATTS will feature a full-length football field, eight-lane Mondo Track surface, space for baseball and softball practices and many other amenities.
The $12.3 million project is set to be completed sometime in early 2011.
Blose Award Nominee
Senior placekicker Stephen Blose is one of 40 individuals named to the Watch List for the Fred Mitchell Award.
The Mitchell Award honors Football Championship Subdivision (FCS), Division II, III and National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) collegiate placekickers for excellence on the football field and in the community. Blose is among 15 FCS kickers who were nominated for the award.
He is also one of 121 semifinalists, including one of 28 nominees from the Football Championship Subdivision, for the 2010 William V. Campbell Trophy, endowed by HealthSouth.
