Youngstown -- The Youngstown State volleyball stormed back from a 2-0 deficit to force a fifth set, but Loyola scored the final eight points of the decisive set to win 3-2 (25-22, 25-9, 22-25, 15-25, 15-8) on Saturday afternoon at Beeghly Center.
The Penguins played inspired in the third and fourth sets in trying to get Haley Kapferer a win on senior day. YSU led 6-3 in the fifth, and a kill from setter Dani Soubliere gave the Penguins an 8-7 advantage as the teams switched sides. That was the last point that YSU scored, though, as the Ramblers ran off eight straight points.
Mallory Curran had a kill for the sideout, and Melissa Hastings served the next seven points. She had an ace to make the score 9-8, and the Ramblers had six consecutive kills to finish the match.
Curran had a match-high 19 kills while Colleen Francis and Karen Sueppel chipped in with 16 kills and 15 kills, respectively.
Tasha Reid had 12 kills, five blocks and hit .345 to lead YSU. Marissa Hundelt had a double-double with 10 kills and 12 digs, and Kapferer had 10 kills and five blocks. Brianna Kern had a match-high and career-high 25 digs.
Loyola scored the first four points of the first set and never trailed as it won 25-22. YSU closed to within one at 22-21 and 23-22 late. The Ramblers also scored the first five points of the second set as they cruised to a 25-9 win.
The third set was the closest of the match with eight ties and two lead changes, but YSU scored five of the final seven points to win 25-22. YSU led by as many as five midway through, but Loyola rallied to tie it at 19-19. The teams traded points before the Guins closed out the set on a 5-2 run.
YSU led coast-to-coast in the fourth set. Reid had five kills in the set, and Jackie Carlisle and Hundelt had three.
Youngstown State will conclude its season with two matches next weekend. The Penguins will play at Butler on Friday at 7 p.m. and at Wright State on Saturday at 4 p.m.
