Penguins Suffer Gut-Wrenching Four-Set Loss to Wright State

Youngstown -- The Youngstown State volleyball team nearly forced a deciding fifth set against Wright State before squandering a late lead and losing a hard-fought four-set match to the Raiders on Tuesday evening.
The Penguins held on to win the third set 27-25, and they led 22-17 in the fourth set before Wright State rallied to win 27-25. The Raiders won the first set 25-23 and the second 25-18.
YSU freshman Marissa Hundelt tied for the match high with 19 kills, which was also a career high, and classmate Jenna Cavanaugh had a match-best nine blocks. Heidi Splinter countered with 19 kills for Wright State, which improved to 7-10 overall and 2-3 in Horizon League play. YSU dropped to 2-16 and 0-5.
The first set featured 11 ties and eight lead changes, and both teams hit better than .300. Youngstown State opened up a 6-2 lead, and the Penguins led 12-9 on a Haley Kapferer kill. Wright State went ahead 14-13, its first lead since 2-1, on a Splinter kill. The lead changed hands six more times until the Raiders took the lead for good at 22-21. Kills from Grove and Hundelt made the score 24-23, but Splinter connected on her sixth kill of the set on set point to give the Raiders a 1-0 lead.
YSU led 6-3 early in the second set, but a Wright State surge gave the Raiders a 13-10 lead. A 9-2 run by the Raiders closed out the set after YSU reclaimed the lead at 14-13 and 15-14.
The Penguins then had eight blocks in the third set and held on to win 27-25 after Wright State staved off five set points. YSU never trailed in the set, and the Guins led 21-14 on a Jenna Cavanaugh kill. The Penguins led 24-19 after a Splinter service error, but Wright State scored the next five points to tie the score at 24-24. The teams traded side outs, and Kapferer's solo block set up Dani Soubliere's kill at set point.
YSU used the momentum from the third set win to go up 18-9 in the fourth, but the Guins couldn't hold on. YSU led 22-17 after a service error, but the Raiders cut the margin to one behind two blocks and a kill from Shaunda Sandifer. A Soubliere kill gave the Penguins a 24-22 lead, but the Raiders scored three straight points to go up 25-24. Splinter was long on an attack to tie the score at 25, but Katherine Godina answered with a kill for Wright State, and YSU's Kelsi Bitter hit into the net on the next point.
The Penguins had just three blocks through two sets, but they finished with 15 for the match. Hundelt added 15 digs to collect her second career double-double.
Youngstown State will play host to Butler on Wednesday at 5 p.m.
