Kapferer Notches Career-Best 18 Kills in Four-Set Loss to UIC

Youngstown -- Youngstown State senior middle blocker Haley Kapferer posted a caereer-high 18 kills and a match-best seven blocks as the Penguins dropped a four-set match to UIC on Saturday at Beeghly Center.
The Penguins and Flames were tied 1-1 through two sets despite YSU outhitting the Flames .296 to .247 and having six more blocks. UIC held on to win the first set 25-23, and Youngstown State took the second 25-20. YSU was also up 24-22 in the third before succumbing to a 26-24 loss. UIC won the fourth set 25-17.
Marissa Hundelt added a double-double with 13 kills and 17 digs and Tasha Reid had 10 kills. Kelsey Safranek and Aubrey Sniegowski had 18 kills apiece to lead UIC.
In the first set, Youngstown State had three more kills, four more blocks and outhit UIC .250 to .241 in the two-point loss. The set had 10 ties and seven lead changes, which was a preview of the 43 ties and 20 lead changes in the match. Kapferer's first kill of the match gave the Guins a 5-1 lead, but UIC took its first lead at went on a 6-1 run to take its first lead at 7-6. The Penguins regained the lead and held a 21-19 advantage before UIC scored five straight points to go up 24-21. A Hundelt kill and a block by Reid and Cavanaugh made the score 24-23, but Dani Soubliere served wide to give the Flames the win.
Neither team led by more than two in the second set until a Soubliere kill capped a 3-0 run that gave the Penguins a 17-14 lead. UIC never got closer than 19-18, and Grove had a kill at set point to tie the match at 1-1 heading into the break.
The third set was also close throughout, and UIC was the first to take a three-point lead at 18-15 following three straight points. Youngstown State scored three straight points later in the set to go up 24-22 on a Hundelt kill. Setter Jessica Dalke had a kill to give the Flames a side out, and Safranek came up with a lunging dig on the next point that ended up landing in the back of the court on YSU's side. Hundelt then had an attack get caught on the top of the net for an attack error, and she hit long on the next point as UIC completed the rally.
YSU scored three straight points on two Kapferer terminations and a Soubliere kill to tie the fourth set at 13-13. Out of a UIC timeout, middle hitter Janise Dismuke had four straight kills for the Flames, and the Penguins did not get closer than three the rest of the way.
Kapferer's previous career high in kills was 13 against Howard in 2008. Her 18 kills against the Flames came on a .548 attack percentage, which led all players.
Youngstown State will play at Milwaukee on Friday at 8 p.m. Eastern.
