Grove Posts Season High in Kills as Volleyball Loses in Three

Cleveland, Ohio -- Junior Brittany Grove recorded a team-high eight kills in her first start of the season as the Youngstown State volleyball team fell in straight sets to Cleveland State (25-15, 25-20, 25-22) on Friday at Woodling Gym.
Grove, who stepped in for injured starter Kelsi Bitter, had eight kills in 26 attempts while posting five digs. Haley Kapferer had seven kills and two blocks while Brittany McNeal had 16 digs. Youngstown State was also playing without starting middle blocker Jenna Cavanaugh. Nichele Johnson had three kills and recorded a .429 attack percentage as her replacement.
Kara Koch had a match-high 12 kills, and Jackie Dabbelt's 11 kills came with a .471 attack percentage for Cleveland State.
The Vikings improved to 12-1 overall and 3-1 in the Horizon League while the Penguins fell to 2-15 and 0-4.
Cleveland State never trailed in the first set and outhit YSU .250 to .031 en route to its 25-15 win.
The second set had seven ties and four lead changes as both teams were better offensively. The Penguins had 12 of their 28 kills and hit .222 in the second set, but the Vikings had 16 kills and posted a .300 attack percentage. YSU's biggest lead came at 12-9 when Tasha Reid connected on a kill. Cleveland State went on a 6-1 run to guo up 15-13, and YSU stayed within four before the final margin was 25-20.
The Penguins led most of the third set before succumbing late. YSU went up 7-1 behind an ace and two kills from Marissa Hundelt and another ace by Dani Soubliere. The Penguins remained ahead and took a 17-13 advantage on a Grove kill, but Cleveland State rallied again. The Vikings scored five of the next six points to tie the score at 18-18, and, after a Kapferer kill, they eventually took a 22-19 lead. A Hundelt kill, her fourth of the set, cut the margin to 23-22, but the Penguins committed service errors on their final two attempts and fell 25-22.
Youngstown State will play Wright State at 7 p.m. on Tuesday at Beeghly Center.
