Penguins Fall Short Against Loyola, 67-55

Chicago, Ill. -- Youngstown State shot 29.3 percent and Loyola placed three players in double figures as the Penguins dropped a 67-55 decision to the Ramblers on Thursday afternoon at the Gentile Center.
The Penguins fall to 2-11 overall and 0-3 in the Horizon League while the Ramblers improve to 2-11 overall and 1-2 in the league.
Sophomore Ashley Pendleton and freshman Anjalia Lyons led the Penguins with 10 points apiece while Loyola's Jenna Real posted a game-high 25 points and grabbed eight rebounds.
The Penguins trailed by as many as 14 points, 32-18, with 2:59 remaining in the first half but layups by Ta-myra Davis and Pendleton and a buzzer-beating 3-pointer by Lauren Branson sliced the deficit to seven, 32-25, at halftime.
Real scored the first six points of the second half to extend the Ramblers advantage to 13 points, 38-25, at the 17:16 mark.
The Penguins came storming back with an 11-2 run capped by a Kira Mowen 3-pointer with 13:25 to go and cut the Ramblers' lead down to four, 40-36.
After the Ramblers cushioned its lead to nine points, 52-43, Pendleton led another Penguins charge with two jumpers and brought YSU within three, 54-51, with 2:33 remaining.
Loyola scored the next five points to take a eight-point lead, 59-51, and sealed the game converting nine straight free throws.
Marquise Hanser and Maggie McCloskey each scored 13 points for the Ramblers.
The Penguins take on UIC, Saturday, at 4 p.m. (EDT).
