Offensive tackle Pat Crummey is the only player in school history to be selected as the team's offensive lineman of the year in consecutive seasons. He is also one of just two offensive lineman to be named YSU's Athlete of the Year since the award was established in 1987-88.
In his final three years, Crummey started 37 of 38 games as an offensive tackle for the Penguins, an impressive feat after beginning his career at YSU as a defensive lineman. After switching to the offensive line as a sophomore, the Penguins posted a 29-9 mark, won at least eight games every season, advanced to the playoffs twice and reached the National Championship Game in 1999.
For his effort during his senior campaign, Crummey earned first-team All-America honors by The Associated Press, the American Football Coaches Association, the Walter Camp Foundation, the Sports Network and the All-American Football Foundation.
A four-time letterwinner, he was the anchor of an impressive offensive line as a senior. Earning the team's Jim Zdelar Big Mac Offensive Lineman of the Year Award and first team All-Gateway Football Conference honors, he started all 11 games protecting quarterback and fellow 2011 Hall-of-Fame inductee Jeff Ryan's blindside.
As a group in 2001, the Penguins tied the school record averaging 33.5 points per game offensively, averaged a school record 280.5 yards rushing per game and averaged a then-school record 407.1 yards per game. He earned team offensive lineman-of-the-game honors against Lock Haven and Northern Iowa for the 8-3 Penguins.
Following his senior year, he was named The Vindicator/YSU Male Athlete of the Year, joining Mike Cummings (1988) as the only other offensive lineman to win the award.
As a junior in 2000, Crummey started every game for the first time in his career, helping the Penguins to the playoffs and a 9-3 record. Crummey was named first-team all-conference and, for the first time, won the Jim Zdelar Offensive Lineman of the Year Award, which is presented to the team's top offensive lineman. Also, four times in 12 games, Crummey earned the team's offensive lineman-of-the-game honor.
As a sophomore in 1999, Crummey started 14 games as an offensive tackle helping the Penguins (12-3) advance to the NCAA Division I-AA title game against Georgia Southern. YSU had a school-best 5,704 total offensive yards, including a school-record 2,722 yards passing and a record 460 points.
He was a defensive lineman as a true freshman. Crummey appeared in all 11 games in 1998 and recorded 23 total tackles as Youngstown State finished the season 6-5. He had a sack against Western Illinois and was credited with four tackles against UNI and Illinois State.
Crummey signed an undrafted free-agent contract with the New York Giants. He later played in NFL Europe and was part of the Rhein Fire's 2003 squad that advanced to the World Bowl.
He earned his bachelor's degree from YSU in Computer Information Systems.
Crummey is currently a senior programmer analyst for Central Insurance Companies.
He is a graduate of Van Wert High School where he was an All-Northwest Ohio, first-team all-conference and honorable-mention all-state honoree on the defensive side of the ball.
Pat and his wife, Darcy, have two children, Meredith and Zachary. The family resides in Van Wert.
