Associate Athletics Director Tom Morella celebrated his 30th year as a member of the Youngstown State Athletics Department in 2022-23.
Morella is responsible for maintaining and cultivating Penguin Club and Football Alumni Club memberships and events. He also served as sport administrator for the YSU baseball program through the end of the 2024 season.
The 2014 baseball team won the Horizon League Tournament Championship and earned a trip to the NCAA regionals. In the NCAA Tournament the Penguins defeated Indiana State for the program's first Division I postseason victory in school history.
Under Morella's guidance, the Penguin Club has seen consistent financial growth.The Penguin Club has consistently achieved new highs in gross revenue over the last several years. Events such as the Penguin Club Scholarship Golf Outing, Scholarship Ring Banquet, Jamboree and World Penguin Day have seen records in attendance and revenue in recent years. He also oversees the Coaches Court, a room in the Beeghly Center solely for the use of basketball donors on gamedays.
In 2014, Morella became the Horizon League's Baseball Championships staff liaison.
Prior to assuming his current duties, Morella spent three years as the Director of Athletic Development from 2004-07, four years as the Director of Income Operations from 2000-04 and six years as Manager of Ticket Operations from 1994-2000.
His tenure at YSU began in 1993 as a marketing assistant, where he was responsible for group ticket and advertising sales.
Morella graduated magna cum laude from YSU in 1991 with a degree in business administration and earned a master's degree in sports administration from Kent State in 1993. He resides in New Middletown, Ohio.
