Samantha Formeck
Golf
2010-11

Samantha Formeck was a three-time first-team Horizon League selection and twice was tabbed the Golfer of the Year. In her three appearances at the HL Championships, she was first in 2009, third in 2010 and second in her final appearance this past weekend.

Formeck is the second consecutive women’s golfer named the YSU/Vindicator Scholar-Athlete of the Year following last year’s selection of Katie Rogner.

Formeck was a model of consistency throughout her career. In 28 career tournaments, she won six times, placed second on five occasions and had 23 top 10 finishes. Her six victories tie her for the second most in school history.

In 63 rounds played, she set the school record averaging 78.3 strokes per 18 holes. Of her 63 rounds, an impressive 48 were in the 70’s. Her career-low round was a 72, which came at the Ball State Invite in the fall of 2010 and the Bucknell Invite in the fall of 2009.

On Sunday, she finished in second place at the Horizon League Championships with a three-round score of 235 (74-84-79). Formeck was just two strokes off the pace. She was named first-team all-league, and for her postseason efforts, was named to the all-tournament team. This past season she had seven top-three finishes and only once in nine meets did she finish outside the top 10. She placed first at the Robert Morris Classic in October.

As a sophomore, Formeck was named the Horizon League’s Golfer of the Year for her performance during the season. She was the Penguins’ top finisher in nine of 10 events, including a third-place finish at the league meet. She carded a three-round 230 (73-77-80) at the championships.

During her freshman year, Formeck showed her talents early winning the first collegiate tournament she competed in (the Bucknell Invitational). In nine events during the year, she won four and was the team’s top finisher in seven, including the Horizon League Championship. She took medalist honors with a 239 (78-82-79) at the league meet. Formeck was tabbed the HL’s Golfer of the Year as well as the Newcomer of the Year.

In the summer of 2010, she qualified for both the U.S. Women’s Open Amateur and the U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links Championship. At the Publinks  she advanced to the Match Play round (top 64). She also competed at the Public Links event in 2009.

Formeck is a graduate of Northern Cambria High School in her hometown of Northern Cambria, Pa., where she placed in the top 10 at the PIAA State Championships her junior and senior years.

She is the daughter of Pauline and Joseph Formeck. She owns a 3.74 grade-point average as a major in Chemistry/Pre-Pharmacy and will graduate from YSU this spring before attending Pharmacy school in the fall.
