The Youngstown State University Department of Intercollegiate
Athletics is proud to announce the creation of The Charles and
Dorothy Butler Scholarship to enhance the YSU Athletics Scholarship
Endowment Fund.
The Charles and Dorothy Butler Athletic Scholarship is
established in recognition of their dedication to church, family,
community and Youngstown State athletics. The scholarship will
be awarded annually to a player or student support staff member of
the Youngstown State women's basketball program or men's basketball
program.
A 1943 graduate of the University of Notre Dame and native of
Chicago, Mr. Butler served as a captain and three-year monogram
winner on the basketball team. He was a member of the Fighting
Irish's 1940-41, 1941-42 and 1942-43 squads. He played 62 career
games and scored 419 points. In 1942-43, Notre Dame posted an 18-2
mark, overcoming the death of head coach George Keogan during the
season.
Following his collegiate career and serving as a Navy Lieutenant
JG during WWII, he was drafted by the Youngstown Bears of the
National Basketball League (NBL/NBA) and was inducted into several
Halls of Fame. Mrs. Butler served as president or officer of
various church and community organizations and was honored as the
2000 YWCA Woman of the Year.
Among their life’s work, their love and devotion to their
nine children and their growing families has always been paramount.
In their honor, this scholarship will serve to perpetuate their
love for and dedication to their community and the young men and
women who participate in YSU Athletics.
"The establishment of a scholarship fund in honor of our
parents is a meaningful tribute that perpetuates our love for them
and recognizes their support of the young men and women athletes of
Youngstown State University," said their son Tom Butler.
This scholarship is to be awarded to any student or athlete
involved with the women’s basketball program. It can be
awarded to an athlete, equipment manager, trainer or intern.
As long as the recipient fits the criteria above and shows
financial need. Charles and Dorothy and their children want
to make a difference in the life of someone who needs the most
help.
Youngstown State Director of Athletic Development Joe Cassese
said the Butler family has been long-time fans of Penguins
basketball and their legacy continues with the creation of this
scholarship endowment.
"When the Penguins take to the basketball court if you look to
the left of the press-row table, without fail, you will see Charles
and or Dorothy Butler," Cassese said. "To say they are loyal
Penguins fans is an understatement. How fitting it is that a
student-athlete will be able to receive scholarship aid in their
honor. The Butler family’s loyal support of YSU athletics is
inspiring."
